SALT LAKE CITY - The Utes enter the regular season after two very successful pre-season tournaments. Utah's first competition was the Park City Labor Day Tournament held at the Park City Racket Club. In the men's singles draw, Ashley Dyer was the tournament's top seed. He competed along with Trevor Ferguson, Kevin Zenger, Nicholas Yip, Kaisorn Chaichana, David Mercier, Patrik Wallebring and Tyler Poulson. All but two of the Ute participants won their first round matches. Dyer emerged from the field of 32 to defeat Carlos Lozano and win the men's open singles competition.
In the doubles portion of the tournament, four Ute combinations entered play including Dyer and Yip, Mercier and Poulson, Chaichana and Wallebring and Ferguson and Zenger. All four won their first round matches, three of them advanced to the second round, and the Poulson and Mercier combination defeated Jared Burnham and Warren Pretorius to win the doubles draw.
The second of Utah's preseason tournaments was a trip to Boise State to compete in the Boise State University Men's Fall Open. First-year Ute David Mercier emerged from the field of 64 to take the singles title, winning six matches along the way and downing B.J. Hauck in straight sets, 7-6, 6-3, for the win. Dyer also had an impressive showing, advancing to the tournament's quarterfinals. After falling in the first round, sophomore Patrik Wallebring won the losers bracket, winning four additional matches.
