SALT LAKE CITY -
The University of Utah has brought an exciting new football scheduling philosophy into the new millennium-one that will pit the Utes against some of the best teams and conferences in the nation. Utah Head Coach Ron McBride and Athletics Director Dr. Chris Hill set the wheels in motion to move Utah to the next level of football competition by developing a winning program and building a beautiful new 45,634-seat stadium.
Armed with a decade that saw Utah go to five bowl games, the most in school history, and one of the finest stadiums in the nation in Rice-Eccles Stadium, Hill sought to beef up Utah's football schedule. With help from Community Relations Director Bruce Woodbury, Hill succeeded in attracting a host of big name opponents to play Utah on a home and away basis over the next seven years. During that time, Utah will play home and away games with at least six Pacific-10 schools, one team from the Big 10, as many as three from the Big 12 and one from the Atlantic Coast Conference.
The stiff schedules begin next fall, with three Pac-10 teams on Utah's docket. The Utes play Arizona (Sept. 2) and Washington State (Sept. 16) at home in Rice-Eccles Stadium and square off against California in Berkeley (Sept. 9). Guaranteed non-conference games in 2001 will include road games at Oregon and Indiana. Indiana will return the favor in 2002, playing in Salt Lake City. Utah plays at Arizona in 2002. The Utes still need one more home game in both 2001-2002 and hope to continue the trend toward high caliber non-conference opponents.
Highlighting the 2003 schedule are home games with Cal and Oregon and a game at Big-12 power Texas A&M. In 2004, the big games scheduled are home contests with North Carolina and Texas A&M and a road game at Arizona. The year 2005 will bring Arizona and Oregon State to Rice-Eccles Stadium, while Utah plays at North Carolina. In 2006, Utah kicks off a two-game series with UCLA-the first game in Los Angeles. The Bruins will come to Salt Lake City in 2007. In addition to UCLA, Pac-10 rival Oregon State is on Utah's 2007 home schedule and a road game with Texas is in the works. Utah is also negotiating with Colorado for a home and away series.
While the majority of the non-conference schedule is filled through 2007, Utah does not yet know its Mountain West Conference slate. As is the case with any conference that enjoys a network television package, the conference schedule is the last to be determined. It is known that Utah will have four home games against MWC teams in 2000 and they are good ones! Utah, co-champion of the MWC in 1999, has the other two champs on its home schedule in Brigham Young and Colorado State, as well as Air Force and UNLV. The MWC schedule for 2000 should be released sometime in February or March. This web site will be updated as soon as the MWC schedule is made available.
