SALT LAKE CITY -
The 2000 Ute football schedule, approved for release by the Mountain West Conference on Feb. 11, features one of the best home slates ever at the University of Utah. Spectators in Utah's 45,634-seat Rice-Eccles Stadium will see the likes of Pacific-10 teams Arizona (Sept. 2) and Washington State (Sept. 16), as well as MWC powers Air Force (Sept. 23), Colorado State (Oct. 21) and Brigham Young (Nov. 24). Utah meets a third Pac-10 team on the road, playing California in Berkeley on September 9. A complete schedule is found below.
Utah opens its 2000 campaign September 2, hosting Arizona in a game that will be televised live on ESPN2 to a national audience. The schedule has two open dates, on October 7 and November 18.
Times for most games have not been set, as they will be determined by television. The MWC television package has already wrapped up seven nationally televised games for its teams, including the Utah-Arizona game on September 2 (ESPN2) and the Utah-BYU game on November 24 (ESPN). At least five more games will be telecast by ESPN/ESPN2 and ABC will pick up at least one additional game. The initial portion of the ESPN Regional (ESPN+Plus) package will be announced in early August.
The Utes go into their power-packed 2000 schedule coming off a great year that saw them finish 9-3 overall and tie for the Mountain West Conference Championship. After a season-ending victory over BYU in Provo, Utah was invited to the EA Sports Las Vegas Bowl, where it defeated Fresno State 17-16.
