SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah Men's Tennis Team continued its hot streak at home, winning its third consecutive match to improve the season's team record at the Eccles Tennis Center to 4-0 and the Utes overall mark to 4-4. Utah downed Portland 6-1 dropping its season record to 2-7.
Utah began the match by squeaking out a heavily contested doubles point. The No. 1 match was won by Portland and the No. 2 by the Utes. The No. 3 match was the deciding one as the Utah freshman duo of David Laverty and Daniel Carlsson edged Peter Malacek and George Agapitos, 9-8 after the tie-breaker.
The Utes rolled after the momentum of the doubles win, taking five of six singles matches. Carlson continued his tough play as he won his fourth match in the last five contests, downing Joe Tostenrude, 7-5, 6-0. Carlsson has a team best 6-2 dual singles record.
Utah will take a week off before one of the biggest matches of the year, as BYU will visit the Eccles Tennis Center on Mar. 3 at 6:00 p.m..
