The Utah football team begins week four of spring ball. Practices are scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday and a scrimmage is planned for Saturday. The weekday practices will run from about 3-5 p.m. Saturday's scrimmage, the second of three this spring, will start at about 10 a.m. Practices and scrimmages are held at the McCarthey Practice Fields, weather dependent. All practices and scrimmages are open to the public.
LAST WEEK
The first scrimmage of the spring was held last Saturday (April 8) before an overflow crowd at the McCarthey Practice Fields. All five Ute quarterbacks took snaps and the coaches also got a look at all of the running back candidates returning from last year. The defense stood out, as it has most of the spring. More details are contained in "Scrimmage Notes."
INTERVIEW POLICIES
All practices are open to the media, but interviews will only be conducted after the completion of practice. Practices usually run about two hours. This week only, please make interview requests through Nicole in the sports information office at 581-3511. (Sports information director Liz Abel will be gone with the gymnastics team to the NCAA Championships from Tuesday-Sunday.)
SPRING INJURIES
Several players are limited or unable to practice at all due to injuries. Key among those are three honor candidates: Senior wide receiver/punt returner Steve Smith cannot participate in contact drills while continuing to recover from a fractured neck vertebrae suffered last November against Brigham Young. Senior linebacker Kautai Olevao will have arthroscopic surgery on his knee on April 13. Senior offensive lineman Sam White will likely sit out the rest of spring ball to rest a sore knee. Two Utes will miss the remainder of spring ball with foot injuries: defensive lineman Ed Johnson and offensive lineman Joe McCullum.
SCRIMMAGE NOTES
Co-starting quarterback T.D. Croshaw threw the only touchdown pass of last week's scrimmage-an 11-yard toss to Philippe Wells ... Utah's five quarterbacks combined to complete 18 of 34 passes (53%), but were sacked seven times, twice by Wes Tufaga ... Croshaw was 4-6 for 88 yards and fellow starter Darnell Arceneaux was 3-8 for 32 yards ... Third string QB Tony Alvarez put up the biggest numbers, completing 4 of 8 passes for 79 yards ... Senior Johnny Lundy was the top receiver with 5 catches for 94 yards ... One time walk-on Mbe Agbor had the most success of Utah's five running backs. He rushed eight times for 49 yards ... Garrett Smith has a sack and a pass breakup.
SPRING NOTES
The Utes have two weeks left of spring ball. In that time, they'll have four practices and two scrimmages. They have the option of another practice, date to be determined ... The final spring scrimmage will be held on Fri., Apr. 21 ... The defensive two-deep has two changes this week from injuries. Maurice Gaines will back up at right corner in place of Airabin Justin (ankle sprain) and Tevita Vakalahi will back up at tackle in place of Ed Johnson (broken foot) ... There's a battle going on at open end, where Marcus Jones and Dylan Bird are neck and neck ... Chris Christensen appears to have recovered from last year's season-ending broken leg. Christensen is currently No. 1 at slot back.
MCBRIDE SAYS
"I thought the defense played really well in our scrimmage last Saturday. Garrett Smith and Ma'ake Kemoeatu really showed up for the defense. The offense needs to improve its consistency. We need to determine what the rotation of the quarterbacks and running backs will be. We'd like to know where we sit with those groups when spring ball ends."
