Provo, Utah - The University of Utah softball team defeated the Cougars of Brigham Young, 3-1 and 7-5 in nine innings at Harmon Field in Provo, Utah on Sat., Apr. 15. Utah moves to 27-19 overall, 7-3 in the MWC. The Cougars are now 10-19 overall, 2-8 in the Mountain West.
In game one, Utah's Molly McLean was 2-for-4 and teammate Lisa Hashimoto-Hall was 1-for-3 with two runs. Senior Sunny Smith had and RBI double, while Jenny Monson had one hit, one RBI and one run. Kristin Arbogast recorded the win for Utah, pitching seven innings, holding the Cougars to four hits, one run, one walk and struck out eight. As a team, the Utes were 7-of-28 with three runs and three RBI.
In the second game, BYU scored first in the second inning, but Utah came back in the third to tie the game at one a piece. Each team battled back and fourth for the lead until the sixth inning when the score was tied 4-4. It wasn't until the ninth inning when the Utes broke the game open, scoring three runs. BYU came back with one run in the bottom of the ninth, but it wasn't enough as the Utes went on to win the game and the series. Molly McLean and Lyndsey Trevis each went 2-for-5, with McLean also scoring a run for Utah. Sunny Smith was 1-for-4 with a double, one run and 2 RBI. Jenny Monson was 1-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Senior Nicole Wilkinson hit a solo home run in the game. Kristin Arbogast took the win but, Jeanette Herbert came in for Arbogast in the top of the fourth and pitched two innings, giving Arbogast a rest. Arbogast came back to finish the game in the top of the sixth inning, giving up nine hits, three runs, six walks and struck out three in the game. As a team, the Utes were 8-of-40 with seven runs and six RBI.
