SALT LAKE CITY -
The Utah coaching staff rested its starters in the final spring scrimmage and the backups made the most of their extended playing time. The biggest day was turned in by the quarterback-receiver tandem of Lance Rice and Brad Burtenshaw. Rice hit Burtenshaw four times for 74 yards and a 41-yard touchdown strike. The redshirt freshman quarterback put up the best numbers of the three QBs who took snaps. Rice completed 8 of 13 passes for 130 yards and 1 touchdown.
Senior Tony Alvarez, currently No. 3 on the depth chart, also had a good day. Alvarez completed just 3 of 8 passes for 48 yards, but two throws, including a sure touchdown pass, were dropped by his receivers. Sophomore Joel Gines made the most of his one completion (8 attempts), throwing a 14-yard touchdown strike to senior tight end Andy Kassotis.
Thomas Fortune rushed eight times for 30 yards and the only rushing TD of the day, from five yards out. Mbe Agbor rushed seven times for 19 yards and Nick Morgan rushed three times for 31 yards.
Defensively, Garrett Smith and Dylan Bird each had a sack and Desmond Davis broke up a pass. Golden Whetman made a 33 yard field goal.
