SALT LAKE CITY -
A full complement of 105 players reported to Utah's fall football camp on August 8-9 in preparation for "double days", which will run from August 11-21. Friday, with orientation and physicals completed, 71 veterans and 34 newcomers took part in the first day of practice.
Practice No. 1, a morning session at the McCarthey Practice Fields, ran smoothly with the exception of two injuries: Linebacker Matt Ward suffered a back injury, which will be evaluated by the team doctors on Monday, and offensive guard Joe McCullum re-fractured his right foot. McCullum will undergo surgery to insert a bigger screw on Saturday and is expected to miss at least six weeks.
Practice No. 2, held Friday evening, featured some aggressive play between the two lines, despite the fact that the full pad drills won't begin for another four days. "I really liked the competitiveness on the offensive and defensive lines," said Ute Coach Ron McBride, who earlier in the day agreed to a new four-year contract. "I also liked how the DBs and wide receivers got after each other. Those guys and the linemen took no prisoners."
The Utes will hold three practices over the weekend: two on Saturday and one on Sunday.
