Salt Lake City-Utah's women's soccer team dropped its second straight overtime game, falling to Washington State 3-2 in double-overtime at Ute Field.
The Utes have played three OT games in as many regular season contests to start the 2000 campaign 0-2-1.
Sophomore Katie Tate recorded her third goal of the year three minutes into the game, when she found the right edge of the net. Amy Kofoed crossed the ball to the middle, where Shauna Gurr touched it to Tate for the score. Utah led 1-0 at halftime. WSU knotted the game at 1-1 in the 66th minute. Kofoed, last year's leading scorer, found the net for the first time this season in the 82nd minute on a ball assisted by freshman Amber Brower to put the Utes up 2-1. However, the lead was short lived. The Cougars forced OT 35 seconds later with a goal.
Gurr barely missed a game-winning goal on a penalty kick that careened off the bar in the first extra period. Washington State took advantage of the missed opportunity by punching the game-winner into the upper-left of the goal 20 seconds into the second OT. For the third consecutive game Utah out shot its opponent, 26-14 in this one, but couldn't make the extra opportunities payoff.
"We need more composure as a team," said Head Coach Amy Winslow. "In the second half and overtime we did some quality things. Ultimately we have got to put the ball in the net. That stems from a lack of composure. We'll just keep stressing discipline to execute in pressure situations."
