The University of Utah men's tennis team will host Utah State University in a dual match on Saturday, Jan. 27 at the Eccles Tennis Center. Matches will begin at 5:00 p.m. The last time the two teams met, the Utes came out victorious over the Aggies.
THE UTES: Coach F.D. Robbins has helped the tennis team put together a solid core of returning athletes, including: six returning letterwinners, a transfer who played the No. 1 position at Weber State last season, and a returning redshirt. Last season, the Utes finished fifth in the Mountain West Conference and had a 9-14 overall record. With depth on this year's squad, the Utes hope to see improvement this season. "We have good depth," says Robbins. "We have strength at the bottom, and that will be a big asset that can help us win matches. We have a good mix of young and experienced players. I'm looking for the returning players to step up and establish themselves. I'm confident that they will."
WHAT TO WATCH FOR: Robbins is enthusiastic about the team's success in the fall season. Nicholas Yip had an excellent fall, and the Utes are looking for him to carry his success into the spring. Yip fought his way to the semi-finals at the BYU Invitational and he and doubles partner, Kevin Zenger, placed second at the ITA Regional Championships. Yip posted a 5-2 record in fall play. He and Zenger are 6-2 in doubles play.
Zenger is the only senior on this year's squad and is expected to make his mark in singles play. He finished fall play with a 3-3 record. Daniel Carlsson 13-8 overall record in 2000 was the best on the team. The Utes are hoping that he can provide the same type of results this season.
