Stockton, Calif. - The University of Utah women's basketball team lost a heartbreaker to the University of the Pacific Tigers, 68-62, on the road on Fri., Dec. 28. The Utes move to 7-4 overall. Pacific improves to 5-5 on the season.
A very scappy and physical game left the Utes angry as they let a seven point lead slip past them and the Tigers went on to win. Utah sustained the lead for the better part of the game, however with four minutes left, Pacific started to close the gap. Poor free-throw shooting and foul trouble were the key factors in the loss. Utah managed to shoot just 50 percent (11-of-22) from the free-throw line and committed 20 fouls in the game. Pacific shot 74 percent (23-of-31) from the free-throw line, making eight of their last 12 attempts in the final minute of play. A foul ruled intentional by Lindsay Herbert and a lane violation called on Carley Marshall in the last minute of play didn't help matters any.
On the night, senior Erin Gibbons racked up 20 points, three assists, one block and one steal. Gibbons shot 7-of-18 from the field, 4-of-8 from three-point range and 2-of-4 from the free-throw line. Lindsay Herbert totaled 18 points, three assists, one block and one steal. Herbert shot 6-of-9 from the field, 2-of-3 from behind the arc and 4-of-6 from the free-throw line. Carley Marshall led the team on the boards with six and added eight points in the effort. As a team, the Utes went 21-of-51 from the field and 9-of-18 from three-point range.
Selena Ho led Pacific with 16 points. Teammate Gillian d'Hondt posted a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Jakehima Mercier added 10 points on the night. The Tigers shot 39 percent (20-of-52) from the field and 46 percent (5-of-11) from the behind the arc. Pacific edged the Utes on the boards, 36-35.
"I am disappointed in our play tonight," said Head Coach Elaine Elliott. "I feel like we backtracked from the beginning of the season and it is very frustrating. We gave the game away at the free-throw line and when you shoot just 50 percent from the free-throw line, you are not going to win ball games. We had the lead, we just weren't committed to playing a tough game. Our schedule is tough and it is hard to play on the road. That is no excuse, we have to come to play and play tough."
