SALT LAKE CITY -
The 2001 Mountain West Conference schedule, released on February 7, has Utah opening its conference season at Air Force on September 15 and closing it on November 17 at Brigham Young. All of Utah's games will be played on Saturday this year, starting with the home opener on September 1 against Utah State in Rice-Eccles Stadium. A complete schedule can be found below.
After kicking off the season at home, Utah begins perhaps the most difficult part of its assigned schedule: The Utes face three straight games on the road, playing at Oregon (September 8), Air Force (September 15) and Indiana (September 22). The three road games in a row fit within the MWC scheduling guidelines, which only prevent teams from playing more than two consecutive conference road games or three consecutive road games during conference play.
"We have some good opponents early, which will tell us what kind of team we have," said Utah Head Coach Ron McBride. "The first six weeks of the season will be extremely tough but then we have an open date, which will give us a chance to prepare our remaining conference games."
The Mountain West Conference, which begins its third year of football competition on August 30 when San Diego State hosts Arizona in an ESPN2 televised game, has locked in seven nationally televised games for the league. None of Utah's games are on the original ESPN/ESPN2 television schedule, but there will be at least four more ESPN2 and two ABC games that will be selected at a later date. Utah is guaranteed appearances on ESPN Regional (ESPN+Plus) television, per the MWC Game of the Week package.
Said MWC Commissioner Craig Thompson, "With so many television games still undetermined, as the season progresses, teams will have a chance to earn additional exposures."
The ESPN contract requires that all games for the first three weeks of September will be determined by August 1. The remaining nationally or regionally televised games will be chosen within a six to12 day window. The Utes will also benefit from their local partnership with KJZZ TV.
