PROVO, UTAH - The 66th-ranked University of Utah tennis team fell to 6-6 in dual play as they were defeated by 70th-ranked BYU in their conference opener Mar. 22. The Utes will continue conference play throughout the weekend, playing Air Force on Friday and New Mexico, Saturday in Provo.
The Utes fell behind early, giving the doubles point to the Cougars after losing two or three doubles matches. Daniel Carlsson and David Mercier won for the Utes from the No. 2 doubles spot, 8-4. Nik Yip and Kevin Zenger fell to the nationally 17th-ranked tandem of Carlos Lozano and Gert Vilms, 8-6.
In singles, Corrie Scheepers earned Utah's sole victory from the No. 5 position, defeating BYU's Anton Rudjuk, 6-4, 6-1. BYU proceeded to win at the top-three positions, sealing the victory. Because both teams will endure two more matches this weekend and the Cougars had secured the win, the remaining matches were not finished.
