SALT LAKE CITY -
The University of Utah football team opened its spring camp with 24 period practice on Saturday. It was a no tackle opener, with the Utes wearing shorts and helmets under warm temperatures. Utah Head Coach and his staff ran the team through a variety of drills, concentrating on 7-on-7 situations for the quarterbacks, while the defense worked 9-on-7. The practice, which was closed to the public, finished at around 1 p.m. with some special teams work.
Three quarterbacks took reps for the Utes, but one wasn't redshirt freshman Brett Elliott, who is a contender for the starting job this year. Elliott sprained the thumb on his throwing (right) hand about eight weeks ago in a basketball game. He participated in everything other than the actual throwing situations and is expected to be able to throw in a week or so. While he watched, sophomore Lance Rice and sophomore transfer Ryan Breska, the other two top candidates to start in the fall, shared the reps with returned Mormon missionary J.D. Jorgensen.
"The guys concentrated well today," said McBride. "We got a look at our quarterbacks, which is something we'll monitor closely this spring. The guys looked good. We have a lot of experience back, just not a lot of starters."
Practice resumes on Monday with another "no-pads" practice. Tackling will start on Tuesday. All practices this year will be closed to the public, the exception of the spring game on April 21.
