SALT LAKE CITY -
The Utah football team will go "live" on Saturday, holding its first scrimmage of the spring. The scrimmage, which is closed to the public, will feature mostly situational down and distance drills. Plans have the Utes running 85 plays, although that could change depending on the weather.
The scrimmage has already tentatively been moved to Rice-Eccles Stadium since the practice fields are under water. If the rain continues, the scrimmage might be moved to another day. The Utes practiced in the Bubble on Thursday because of the wet practice fields.
If the scrimmage is held as planned, four quarterbacks will take turns running the offense: No. 1 Lance Rice, co-backups Ryan Breska and Brett Elliott and returned missionary freshman J.D. Jorgensen. Receivers Cliff Russell and Josh Lyman will be held out of the scrimmage, as both are nursing hamstring pulls. In their place, freshman returned missionary Morgan Scalley and redshirt freshman Justin Waltersheid will get a good look from the coaches.
The run game, on the other hand, will feature several different players. Halfback, in particular, looks stocked. The first string halfback is 2000 second-team all-conference senior Adam Tate. Battling for the No. 2 spot are senior Dameon Hunter and first-year Ute (Arizona State transfer) J.R. Peroulis. Sophomore Edwin Benton has surprised this spring and will also get reps. At fullback, senior Thomas Fortune is No. 1, but incoming freshman Rob Sirstens is showing big potential. He and sophomore Brandon Bliss are sharing time behind Fortune.
Defensively, Utah's youthful secondary will be tested under game like conditions. Sophomore strong safety Arnold Parker is the only defensive back with any measurable Division I experience. His counterpart at strong safety, sophomore Anthony White, has made a great showing so far this spring.
