Representing Utah at the Mountain West Conference Football Preview in Las Vegas, July 29-31, will be Head Coach Ron McBride, senior offensive tackle Doug Kaufusi and junior linebacker Sheldon Deckart. McBride has a 75-53 record in his 11 years as head Ute coach. Kaufusi, a returning first-team all-MWC offensive lineman, has been named to the preseason all-MWC team in at least two 2001 preseason publications: Athlon Sports and Heery's Pro & College Football Handbook. Deckart, who is scheduled to start at rover, was named to Athlon's preseason all-conference team.

COMING AT 'YA
Utah opens its 2001 campaign on September 1 in Rice-Eccles Stadium, hosting Utah State in a 6 p.m. contest. The Utes will not play on their home turf again until September 29, after they have completed a grueling three-week road swing that will pit them against Oregon, Air Force and Indiana. Utah's game against New Mexico on September 29 is Homecoming.
AT THE HELM
Ron McBride has a 75-53 record in his 11 years as head Ute coach. He has the second most wins of any coach in Utah football history. McBride has won a share of two conference titles (1995 and 1999) and has nine winning seasons. He has taken the Utes to five bowl games and has a 2-3 bowl record. Utah's most recent bowl appearance was in 1999, when the Utes beat Fresno State 17-16 in the Las Vegas Bowl.
GOOD TO GO
Ma'ake Kemoeatu and Sam White have both been awarded another year of eligibility by the NCAA. Kemoeatu came to Utah as an academic non-qualifier and could not play as a freshman. Utah's starting nose guard, he was granted another year after completing 75 percent of his degree requirements, as required by the NCAA in his case. White was granted a medical hardship year. A starting left guard from 1997-99, White has undergone four knee surgeries since then and was sidelined after playing just one game last year.
WAITING FOR THE PHONE TO RING
Still in limbo for the 2001 season is center Steve McKane. McKane, who has battled knee injuries for the past two years, is hoping to receive a medical hardship year from the NCAA. Until the NCAA makes a ruling, which could take weeks, McKane has a waiver to practice with the team.
PRE-CAMP NOTES
There are 37 lettermen returning from last year's team, including 10 full or part-time starters on offense and 6 on defense ... Golden Whetman, who was Utah's starting punter last year and also shared in the place-kicking duties, has left the team. His likely replacement at punter is transfer Brian Lewis, who edged Ryan Kaneshiro for the No. 1 place-kicking job in the spring ... Returning first-team all-conference offensive lineman Doug Kaufusi was selected by the executive committee of the Rotary Lombardi Award to its 2001 Rotary Lombardi Award Watch List.
NO TIME
Just four game times have been finalized for the 2001 Ute football season: Both the Utah State (Sept. 1) and South Florida (Oct. 6) games will kick off at 6:00 p.m. in Rice-Eccles Stadium, Utah's game at Oregon on Sept. 8 will start at 12:30 p.m. (PT) and its game at Air Force on Sept. 15 will start at 1:00 p.m. Due to network television obligations (Utah is part of the Mountain West Conference's pact with ESPN), many start times will not be determined until 12 days in advance of the game. As soon as Utah officials are informed of the start time for a game, it will be posted on Utah's official web site (www.UtahUtes.com).
