Utah Women's Basketball Wins Conference Opener

Salt Lake City - The University of Utah women's basketball team defeated the Wyoming Cowgirls, 80-59 in the MWC opener at the Jon M. Huntsman Center on Thurs., Jan. 10. The Utes improve to 8-5 overall, 1-0 in the MWC. Wyoming drops to 7-6 on the season, 0-1 in MWC play.
The game was very physical and fast paced tonight. Utah started out shooting, making 16-of-33 from the field , 4-of-13 from three-point range and 1-of-2 from the free-throw line in the first half. Senior Erin Gibbons racked up 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field and made 2-of-7 from behind the arc in the first half. The Utes went into the break leading, 37-29.
Carley Marshall stepped it up in the second half, giving the Utes 14 points and seven rebounds on the night. Sharee Hendrix came into the game in the second half, playing aggressively and gave the Utes some extra speed and intensity down the stretch.
"I though we were tired early in the second half and Sharee was a big boost with her quickness and physicalness," said Head Coach Elaine Elliott. "Carley made some adjustments in the second half and she was a big contributor for us tonight. Gibbie (Erin Gibbons) certainly had big numbers for us tonight and Herbie (Lindsay Herbert) gave us an offensive boost as well."
On the night, Utah had four players score in double figures. Senior Erin Gibbons racked up 20 points, four rebounds and six assists in 40 minutes of play. Gibbons went 8-of-15 from the field, 3-of-9 from three-point range and 1-of-2 from the free-throw line. Lindsay Herbert recorded a season-high 19 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals. Herbert went 7-of-13 from the field, 4-of-8 from behind the arc and 1-of-2 from the free-throw line. Teammate Lauren Beckman added 11 points and seven boards in the game. As a team, the Utes went 28-of-60 from the field, 8-of-23 from three-point range and 16-of-21 from the free-throw line.
Darci Arsene led all scorers on the night with 23 points and eight rebounds. She went 7-of-14 from the field, and 9-of-10 from the free-throw line. Teammate Carrie Bacon added 10 points and eight boards in the game. The Cowgirls shot 37 percent (18-of-49) from the field, 25 percent (4-of-16) from the behind the arc and 86 percent (19-of-22) from the free-throw line.
Utah edged the Cowgirls on the boards, 33-32 and racked up 32 points in the paint. The Utes scored 28 points off Wyoming turnovers and totaled 22 points from the bench.
"I want this team to show effort, improvement and commitment the rest of the year like they did tonight," said Elliott. "I'm happy with the way we came out to play. We played tough down the stretch and I want that to continue. That is our focus right now."

The Utes will take on New Mexico on Sat., Jan 19, at 7:00 p.m. in Albuquerque, N.M. Utah hosts in-state rival Brigham Young on Sat., Jan. 26 at 3:00 p.m. On Thurs., Jan. 31, the Utes will face the UNLV Rebels at 7:00 p.m. in Salt Lake City. Utah will take on the San Diego State Aztecs on Sat., Feb. 2 at 3:00 p.m. in Salt Lake City.
