McBride, who plans to hire an offensive assistant to fill the coaching vacancy, will wait until recruiting is completed to begin a national search. The recruiting period ends on Feb. 6, which is National Letter of Intent day for football.
"Steve did a fine job for us. What he liked about the BYU job was the chance to return to his alma mater and to coach the entire defensive line," says McBride. "He came to us as a graduate assistant and we promoted him to a full-time position a year later (in 1995). We appreciate what Steve has contributed to our program and wish him the best of luck in his new job."
With Kaufusi's departure, McBride will look to hire a coach for either the running backs or wide receivers to balance out his staff. This past season, first-year Ute assistant coach Vincent White was responsible for both positions. White spent most of his time with the running backs while a graduate assistant coached the receivers.
"I will hire a coach on the offensive side of the ball because that's where our needs lie at this point," says McBride. Assistant head coach Gary Andersen, who has coached the defensive tackles and strong side ends for the past four years, will now be responsible for the entire line.
"I plan to make a national search for a new assistant coach and will start evaluating candidates after letter of intent day," says McBride.
