SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah men's basketball team's annual Night with the Runnin' Utes will take place Saturday, Oct. 19 at 6:00 p.m. in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. It will follow the Utah vs. Colorado State football game set for 1:00 p.m. at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
The event is free to the public and will give Utah fans a chance to preview the 2002-03 edition of the Runnin' Utes. Crimson Club members are also invited to a photo session with the team at 5:00 p.m.
The basketball coaching staff will introduce this year's team, run them through practice drills and divide them up for an intrasquad scrimmage. A three-point shooting contest and a slam dunk contest will also be a part of the festivities.
Four key lettermen return from last year's team that went 21-9 overall, advanced to the NCAA Tournament and was the Mountain West Conference runner-up. Senior forward Britton Johnsen, a Wooden Award candidate this season, is the reigning Mountain West Player of the Year. Junior guard Nick Jacobson, who was named third team all-MWC, set the Utah season record with 71 three-pointers in 2001-02. Senior center Cameron Koford started 13 of the final 15 games last season. Senior guard/forward Trace Caton, a staunch defender, averaged 22 minutes a game off the bench.
Junior center/forward Tim Frost steps on the court this season after transferring from Portland, where he was a first team all-West Cost Conference pick. Sophomore guard Marc Jackson, who played in 21 games at point guard in 2000-02, rejoins the Utes after a year away. In addition to redshirt freshman center Chris Jackson, Utah adds three California prep standouts in Richard Chaney, Tim Drisdom and Bryant Markson.
