SALT LAKE CITY -
Utah head coach Ron McBride is brimming with enthusiasm over his latest signing class, which contained 23 players by late afternoon on National Letter of Intent Day. The Ute coaches expect 1-2 more players to sign. McBride spoke to a large gathering at Lumpy's Social Club in Salt Lake City on Feb. 6, citing the merits of each signed recruit.
Overall, McBride says, "We filled our immediate needs and our future needs with this class. We added a lot of speed and athleticism to our team. We extended more scholarship offers to offensive players because that's where we needed to rebuild. Our defense was very young this past year."
Three types of recruits were reeled in by the Ute staff. "We brought in some guys who can help us out next year, some guys who will develop in our program and step in when they've had a chance to mature and some guys who will go on (LDS church) missions before joining the team," says McBride.
Asked to talk about a few key players on each side of the ball, McBride had this to say:
Ray Holdcraft, LB, 6-1, 242, Jr., Newport News, Va./Palomar JC
"Ray is an impact player. I expect him to step right in and make a difference on our defense."
Donta Bright, DB, 6-0, 185, Jr., Roswell, N.M./Eastern Arizona JC and
Shaun Harper, DB, 5-10, 185, Fr., San Diego, Calif./Mission Bay HS
"Donta and Shaun are two corners who have legitimate track speed."
Thomas Herrion, OL, 6-4, 330, Jr., Ft. Worth, Texas/Kilgore JC
"Thomas is a big, athletic guy with good feet. He hits movement well."
Brandon Warfield, RB, 6-0, 220, Jr., Houston, Texas/Kilgore JC
"Warfield is a big guy who can run and is a mean son of a gun. He's a downhill runner who can break tackles."
Ben Allison, TE, 6-3, 270, Jr., Ogden, Utah/Modesto JC
"Ben is a stud. He was the best tight end available out there."
Larry Miles, WR, 6-0, 170, Jr., San Diego, Calif./San Diego Mesa JC and
Steven Savoy, WR, 6-0, 183, Fr., Washington, D.C./Dunbar HS
"Miles and Savoy are very fast, the kind of speed receivers we were looking for. We expect both of them to help us right away."
