SALT LAKE CITY -
The University of Utah football team has signed linebacker Spencer Toone to a national letter of intent. Toone, who has recently returned from an LDS church mission to Australia, turned down Brigham Young and USC to sign with the Utes. The 6-2, 230 pound linebacker from Blackfoot, Idaho, played one year at Ricks Junior College before leaving for his mission. He led Ricks in tackles and kickoffs returned for touchdowns in 1999 and helped Ricks win the Real Dairy Bowl. At Snake River High School in Blackfoot, Idaho, Toone was an all-state free safety in 1997 and an all-state running back in 1998.
