UTE SPRING DRILLS ARE WINDING DOWN
There are just two weeks left of spring drills for the Utah football team, which held its first scrimmage last week and has another scheduled for this Saturday. The Utes will conduct practices on Tuesday and Thursday in preparation for Saturday's scrimmage, which starts at 10:30 a.m. and is open to the public. All practices and scrimmages will be held on the McCarthey Practice Fields, weather permitting. If the weather dictates, practices will be moved into the Bubble.SPRING GAME APPROACHING
The Red-White spring game is now just two weeks away. The Red-White game, which has been upgraded from a situational scrimmage to game-like conditions, will be held on Saturday, April 27 at East High School starting at 1:00 p.m. It is free and open to the public.INTERVIEW POLICIES
Interviews will be conducted after the completion of practice. Practices usually run about two hours. Sports information director Liz Abel will be gone this week to the NCAA Gymnastics Championships, so please call Nicole in the sports information office to arrange for phone interviews with Coach McBride. Bill Hall, director of football operations, will handle any interview requests after practice.LAST WEEK
The defense dominated the first scrimmage of the spring, held last Saturday. Senior defensive back Cody Weight, who is battling for playing time at corner, had two interceptions to lead the defense, which allowed just one touchdown. Offensive stars included backup quarterback Brett Elliott (5-7 for 75 yards and 1 TD), running back Morgan Scalley (8 rushes for 38 yards) and receivers Travis LaTendresse (1 catch for 35 yards) and Steven Savoy (3 catches for 33 yards). Elliott directed the only scoring drive of the day, hitting Paris Jackson in the corner of the end zone with an 8-yard pass. Utah's other quarterbacks struggled: starter Lance Rice was 1-7 for 10 yards and 1 interception and Ryan Breska was 2-10 for 30 yards and 1 interception.COACHES' CLINIC
University of Utah head football coach Ron McBride and his staff will conduct a football coaches' clinic on Saturday, April 27 from 9:00 a.m. until noon at the McCarthey Practice Fields. The clinic will precede the Red-White spring game, which will be held at East High Stadium at 1:00 p.m. If the weather is bad, the coaches' clinic will be held inside the Bubble. The cost of admission is $10, which includes lunch. Clinic participants are then invited to watch the spring game at East High, which is free of charge and open to the public. Al Johnson, who was a backup defensive end, moved to tight end last week ... Co-starting running backs Marty Johnson and J.R. Peroulis carried the ball just twice in last week's scrimmage. Each was nursing a slight injury and will be back in action this week ... McBride says Arnold Parker will stay at corner all spring since he is already proven at safety. He said that Parker did not allow a completion in last Saturday's scrimmage ... Two walk-on field goal kickers from last fall had a chance to kick under scrimmage pressure. Bryan Borreson made a 37-yard field goal and a PAT, while missing from 42 and 50 yards out. J.T. Clark made a 42-yarder and missed a 50-yard attempt.SPRING INJURIES
Running backs Marty Johnson (swollen knee) and J.R.. Peroulis (leg strain) have been cleared to resume full workouts. Freshman linebacker Steven Thompson had surgery for a broken finger on April 11 and will miss the rest of spring ball. Senior receiver Brad Burtenshaw has a broken hand and will be limited to running. Wide receiver Josh Lyman (left hamstring) and wide receiver Kylee Brown (right hamstring) are also limited. Defensive end Garrett Smith (knee) is fine and will play this week.COACH RON MCBRIDE SAYS
"The defense is looking really sharp and I really like their hustle and discipline. We're using three or four different packages and the guys are in the right spot at the right time. I'm very excited about how the defense runs. It's a very athletic defense."Offensively, the receivers are playing very well and our second offensive line has made some strides. (QB Brett) Elliott was good in the scrimmage but the other two (Lance Rice and Ryan Breska) were not. All three quarterbacks had been playing well leading up to the scrimmage.
"This week we'll work to sustain our blocks better on the offensive front and do a better job of picking up pressure and throwing hot. We also need to get cleaner in the run game."
