SALT LAKE CITY -
The first Red-White football game of Ron McBride's head coaching tenure was deemed a huge success, despite a driving rainstorm and cold temperatures at East High Stadium. The White team beat the Red team 10-6 in the inaugural spring game, attended by some 600 diehard fans.
While quarterback Lance Rice was one of the few starters to play significant amounts of time, the sopping wet fans found plenty to cheer about from the second and third-stringers. Two running backs and a wide receiver attempted passes, a wide receiver contributed a tackle for loss after lining up at corner and coming in for a corner blitz, a receiver-turned -running back showed some nice moves and led all rushers and a two-man fumble return went 94 yards for the winning touchdown.
Rice, playing for the losing Red team, had a good day despite the lousy playing conditions. He completed 8 of 11 passes for 93 yards, including 27-yard pass play to tight end Matt Hansen. Ryan Breska was 1 of 5 for 36 yards, all which came on his first pass attempt, and Brett Elliott was 4-10 for 57 yards for the winning White team.
Morgan Scalley, who moved from receiver to running back midway through spring camp, had 8 rushes for 66 yards for the White team. The Red team was led by Rob Sirstins, who had 10 carries for 32 yards. Receiver Anthony Arceneaux had a very busy day, catching three balls for 36 yards, attempting a pass (incomplete) and contributing a 7-yard sack.
But the play of the day came deep in White territory, when linebacker Ray Holdcraft forced J.R. Peroulis to fumble on the 6-yard line. Cody Weight recovered the fumble and raced 54 yards before pitching the ball back to Bo Nagahi, who carried it 40 yards into the endzone.
Kicker Bryan Borreson played for both teams and was perfect. He made his only point after attempt and was 3-3 in field goals. Borreson kicked a 31-yard field goal for the White team and scored all of the Red team's points with kicks of 37 and 42 yards.
The Red-White game concluded spring camp for the Utes.
