Salt Lake City - The University of Utah softball team split with the New Mexico Lobos in a MWC match-up at Ute Field on Fri., Apr. 5. The Utes lost game one, 7-6 and won game two, 3-0. Utah improves to 14-30 overall, 3-3 in MWC play. New Mexico moves to 10-19-1 on the season, 2-2 in the MWC.
In game one for the Utes, senior Lyndsey Trevis went 1-for-3 with a double and three RBI, while sophomore Masie Ota went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Heather Bowlin was 2-for-3 with a run scored, and teammate Niki Hayhurst went 2-for-4 with a double and one run scored. Michele Larsen and Melissa Stahnke each had a double in the game. Bowlin went the distance, giving up 12 hits, four earned runs and four walks in 34 batters faced. She now moves to 8-14 on the season. As a team, Utah tallied 10 hits in 30 at bats, along with six runs and five RBI.
New Mexico's Cassie Chavez was 3-for-4 with two homers, two runs and all seven of the Lobos RBI. Hayley Punter recorded the win for New Mexico, she improves to 5-8 on the season.
Game two saw junior Jen Pursell throw a no-hitter up until the top of the seventh inning. Two very questionable calls at first base put the Lobos on the base paths as Pursell (6-15) ended the game with a two-hitter. Trevis had a sacrifice fly to put the Utes on the board early in the game and Stahnke rocked a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning to seal the deal. As a team, Utah tallied seven hits, three runs and three RBI in 27 at bats.
Cayley Warner and Michelle Carter were the only Lobos to get a hit in the game. Lauren McCoy took the loss for New Mexico.
"We didn't put a lot of runs on the board in the second game," said Head Coach Mona Stevens. "Jen (Pursell) had a great game and had a no hitter going into the last inning. She did really well today. There were two questionable calls made at first base, but overall, I thought the umpires did a great job. We will keep plugging away and we've got Colorado State tomorrow. I am expecting some good competition from them as well."
