Ute Football Team Has Scrimmage This Saturday

FIRST SCRIMMAGE ON SATURDAY
The Ute football team, now in its third week of spring drills, will hold its first scrimmage on Saturday. The Utes will hold regular practices on Tuesday and Thursday, starting at 3:30 p.m. Saturday's scrimmage will get underway at 10:30 a.m. at the McCarthey Practice Fields. It is one of three scrimmages ahead for the Utes, the final which will be a full blown spring game on April 27. All practices and scrimmages are open to the public.INTERVIEW POLICIES
Interviews will be conducted after the completion of practice. Practices usually run about two hours. Call Liz Abel at 801-581-3511 to arrange for interviews outside of practice.WATCH THE WEATHER
The Utes will practice outside under most weather conditions. In the case of heavy rain or snow, practice will either be moved to another day or held inside the Bubble. The Bubble is located just south of the Smith Center, adjacent to the McCarthey Practice Fields.LAST WEEK
The Utes practiced under scrimmage-like conditions last Saturday to culminate their first full week of spring drills. The situations they concentrated on included down and distance, first and 10, second and five and third and three-yard exercises.UTE NOTES
"ASAP" is splitting up, at least for now. Arnold Parker, the strong safety part of the combination, has moved to left corner this spring. Antwoine Sanders remains at free safety. Starting in Parker's place at strong safety is Dave Revill. A decision on whether Parker will play corner or safety this fall will be made at a later date ... There's a battle going on at wide receiver, where seven guys are getting lots of reps. Still No. 1 are Josh Lyman at X receiver and Devin Houston at Z. Lyman is backed up by Paris Jackson and Morgan Scalley. Houston is backed up by Justin Walterscheid, Steven Savoy and Travis Latendresse.SPRING INJURIES
Several Utes will either miss the remainder of spring ball, or be limited in what they can do, after suffering injuries in the first two weeks. Starting offensive tackle Jordan Gross (broken left hand) is out for the rest of the spring, as is walk-on freshman tight end Tom Jackman (benign chest tumor). Jackman will have surgery to remove the tumor, which is attached to his spine, in May. Running back Marty Johnson will have an MRI on his left knee on Tuesday. Johnson missed last week's practices. Four wide receivers are currently limited by injuries-Josh Lyman and Morgan Scalley both with hip strains, Jaun McNutt (strained right quad muscle) and freshman Kylee Brown (hamstring). Defensive backs Cody Weight (turf toe) and Antonio Young (hamstring) are also nursing injuries.SCRIMMAGE #1
This Saturday's scrimmage will feature about 100 situational plays. They will include red zone drills, driving the ball out from the end zone, driving the ball downfield, and goal line work from the 3-yard line. The scrimmage will start at 10:30 a.m. at McCarthey Practice Fields and is open to the public.UPGRADED SPRING GAME
Rather than a situational scrimmage held at the practice facility on the final day of camp, this year's spring finale will be a full blown Red-White game. It will be held on Saturday, April 27 at the East High School Stadium starting at 1:00 p.m. The public is invited. Under the new game-like format, Utah's offense and defense will run real plays in full uniform. The special teams will be limited to kickoffs, punts and field goals (no returns), but everything else will be "live."COACH RON MCBRIDE SAYS
"I really like the progress of our defense. It looks to be a solid group. They still have room for improvement, but they are fit and mentally tough. They are playing with a lot of emotion. Of the younger guys, (redshirt freshman defensive lineman) Steve Fifita is really noticeable. I like the competition at linebacker, particularly from Ray Holdcraft, Zach Tune and Steven Thompson."Offensively, our quarterbacks and receivers are doing a good job. Of the receivers, Paris Jackson, Devin Houston and Steven Savoy are doing a real nice job. Our running backs have to continue to run downhill and break tackles. J.R. Peroulis is getting most of the reps since Marty Johnson has been out with a knee problem. Other guys who have stood out are (tight end) Matt Hanson and (backup tackle) Kurt Jackson. We need to improve our offensive line and be more physical up front."
