SALT LAKE CITY -
Athlon Sports has ranked the University of Utah football team in its College Football Top-25 preseason poll. On Wednesday, Athlon, one of the premier sports annals in the country, picked Utah at No. 20 on its Internet site, Athlonsports.com.
The magazine, which last week began revealing one team a day from its preseason poll, has previously ranked Michigan State No. 21, Maryland No. 22, Marshall No. 23, South Carolina No. 24 and Oregon No. 25. A new team will be revealed every weekday until June 11, when Athlon will predict the No. 1 and 2 teams. June 11 will also be the day the magazine hits the newsstands.
Athlon, which analyzed all 117 Division I-A football teams, predicts Utah will win the 2002 Mountain West Conference title, edging out BYU and Colorado State. The magazine named six Utes to its preseason all-conference team. They are offensive lineman Jordan Gross, defensive linemen Garrett Smith and Jason Kaufusi, linebacker Sheldon Deckart and defensive backs Antwoine Sanders and Arnold Parker.
Sanders will be one of three players pictured on the cover of the Athlon West edition on June 11.
