MIAMI -
In the Football News' College Preview Issue, which goes to press on July 15, six Utes made the preseason all-Mountain West Conference team.
Football News selected junior quarterback Lance Rice and senior offensive lineman Jordan Gross to its first-team offense. Utes snared four of the 11 positions on the all-league defensive team, including two linemen: junior Jason Kaufusi and senior Garrett Smith. They were joined on the preseason defensive first team by senior linebacker Sheldon Deckart and junior defensive back Antwoine Sanders.
It is the second publication of the year to name Gross, Kaufusi, Smith, Deckart and Sanders to its preseason all-MWC team. Earlier, The Sporting News named those five, as well as junior center Dustin McQuivey and junior defensive back Arnold Parker to its all-MWC team.
TSN also predicted Deckart would be the 2002 MWC Defensive Player of the Year and liked incoming JC transfer Ray Holdcraft, a junior linebacker, as its 2002 MWC Defensive Newcomer of the Year.
Deckart, Smith and Kaufusi were all first-team all-conference picks a year ago.
