Utah sophomore quarterback Alex Smith, who has led Utah to five straight victories since becoming the starter on Sept. 11, has been named the CSTV Student-Athlete of the Week. Smith was formally announced as the weekly winner on CSTV Primetime, the network's studio show, on Oct. 19.
Smith been named the Mountain West Conference Offensive Player of the Week twice in the last three weeks. He is completing 70% of his pass attempts and has not thrown an interception in his last 139 throws (138 this year). His pass efficiency of 162.28 ranks second in the MWC and seventh in the nation.
He has thrown for 1,197 yards and 8 touchdowns and is averaging 199.5 yards per game passing. He is also Utah's second leading rusher, with 51 carries for 109 yards and 2 touchdowns. He rushed for a career-high 97 yards in Utah's win over UNLV on Oct. 18.
Also an excellent student, Smith is on target to graduate this May, two years ahead of schedule. The sophomore carries a 3.792 GPA in economics. His plans at this time are to pursue an MBA while he plays out the remaining two years of his college football eligibility.
