SALT LAKE CITY - The Red Team defeated the White Team 45-18 in the annual Night With The Runnin' Utes scrimmage on Thursday at the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The crowd was also treated to three-point, slam dunk and dribbling contests, and got its first glimpse of the 2003-04 squad.
Eagerly anticipated Australian freshman forward Andrew Bogut, named the MVP of the FIBA Junior World Tournament this past summer, had 12 points, six rebounds and five assists in the 30-minute scrimmage. Bogut started for the Red Team along with Richard Chaney and Justin Hawkins at the forwards, and returning starters Tim Drisdom and senior Nick Jacobson in the backcourt. Senior center Tim Frost, the third returning starter, sat out the festivities with a sore back.
Sophomore center Chris Jackson had 12 points and 7 rebounds, playing mostly for the White Team. Jacobson scored 10 points, making 4-of-7 shots, and had six rebounds. Hawkins made all four of his shots from the field and finished with 10 points. Bryant Markson finished with 10 points, playing equally between the two teams.
Chaney swept the two major contests of the evening. The sophomore from Los Angeles chose Kyle Larsen from the crowd for his partner in three-point contest. The duo defeated Jacobson and his partner 12-11 in the final. Chaney then leaped over the mascot "Swoop" with an impressive tomahawk to win the slam dunk contest.
Ute fans were also able to pose for pictures with their favorite players after the scrimmage. EA Sports gave away 100 demo copies of its 2004 college basketball video game. Fans also had the chance to be videotaped for inclusion in the official release of the video game later this fall.
Utah opens its exhibition season against the L.A. City All-Stars on Friday, Oct. 31 at 7:00 p.m. in the Huntsman Center.
