SALT LAKE CITY - The No. 21/22 Utah women's basketball team (6-2) won its 20th straight home game this afternoon, a 61-51 victory over Washington State (4-3) in the Huntsman Center. The Utes shot 43 percent from the field on the game, compared to the 31 percent of the Cougars. Utah also out-rebounded Washington State 34-25.
"I thought it was sluggish," Head Coach Elaine Elliott said. "We couldn't sustain anything. We allowed them to stay with us, which is a credit to them, but also a little disappointing. Washington State is much improved from last year. I was really impressed."
Sophomore All-America candidate Kim Smith led Utah with 17 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore Shona Thorburn added 16 points, seven rebounds, six assists and two steals. Senior Carley Marshall finished with 10 points and six rebounds and senior Mandie Little pulled down seven boards.
The Utes started sluggish in the first half, trailing by four (10-6) early before finally taking the lead at 8:05 mark. Utah led by as many as 10 and went into the locker room up eight, 31-23. The Utes shot 43 percent from the field on the half and held the Cougars to 36 percent. Utah also out-rebounded Washington State 17-13 and forced seven Cougar turnovers.
In the second half, the Cougars cut the Ute lead to eight with 15:14 left, but Utah used a 7-0 run to go up by 15 (46-31) and put the game away for good. The Utes shot 41 percent from the field on the half, while Washington State managed just 30 percent.
