No. 19 Utah Women Win 18th Straight At Home

SALT LAKE CITY - All 11 Utes played as the No. 19 Utah women's basketball team won its 18th straight home game tonight, defeating Saint Mary's 69-40 in the Huntsman Center. With the win, the Utes improve to 4-1 on the year. Saint Mary's falls to 3-2.
Utah was 25-of-51 on the game (49 percent), while Saint Mary's made just 29 percent of its shots (15-of-52). The Utes also out-rebounded the Gaels 41 to 27, had six steals and forced 19 Gael turnovers.
Sophomore All-America candidate Kim Smith led Utah with 18 points, six rebounds and no turnovers. Sophomore Shona Thorburn posted her second consecutive double-double, finishing with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Mandie Little was the third Ute in double-digit scoring with 10 points.
Senior Carley Marshall dished out a team-high four assists, while senior Kelsy Stireman nabbed four steals.
"We're playing better now," Head Coach Elaine Elliott said. "Each week you evaluate, work on things and therefore you should get better. We're showing better patience and involving more people. Tonight we played a lot of kids, which gets them some game time. They, and we as a team, will be better off because they having played."
Utah scored the first nine points of the first half, holding the Gaels scoreless for the first 5:47 of the game. Saint Mary's scored five straight to cut the Ute lead to four, but that was as close as they would get. Utah used 12-0 and 15-0 runs later in the half to build its lead to as many as 29 and went into the locker room at halftime up 38-11.
Smith led the Utes with 15 points on the half on 7-of-10 shooting. The Utes, who shot 52 percent from the field, held Saint Mary's to just 22 percent and forced 12 Gael turnovers.
The second half was played more closely with Utah outscoring Saint Mary's 31-29. The Utes shot 45 percent from the field, compared to the 35 percent of the Gaels. Thorburn scored all 10 of her points in the second half.
