No. 23/25 Utah Defeats Northern Arizona 69-45

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - The No. 23/25 Utah women's basketball team improved to 8-3 on the season with a 69-45 win over Northern Arizona this afternoon. The Utes committed a season-high 23 turnovers in the win, but shot 49 percent from the field on the game and 64 percent from three-point range. Utah also out-rebounded the Lumberjacks 43-22 as all 11 Utes played.
"We had a strength factor, they had quickness. Our strength factor came through in the post," Head Coach Elaine Elliott said. "Rebounding was definitely a factor. We managed to keep them off the glass."
Sophomore All-America candidate Kim Smith led a group of four Utes in double-figure scoring with 15. She added five rebounds and four assists. Senior point guard Kelsy Stireman and senior Carley Marshall added 13 points apiece, while senior Mandie Little finished with 10.
Little and sophomore Shona Thorburn grabbed a team-high eight rebounds apiece, while Marshall added seven. Stireman nabbed a team-high three steals, while Little, junior Lana Sitterud and freshman Camie Allen had two.
In the first half, Utah held Northern Arizona scoreless for the first 2:52. The Utes used two 5-0 runs to build its lead to as many as 10 on three occasions and went into the locker room up 28-18.
The story of the half was turnovers, as Utah forced 14 by the Lumberjacks, but committed a season-high 17 of its own. Utah, which connected on 61 percent from the field and 50 percent from downtown, out-rebounded NAU 15-6. Stireman led the Utes with nine points, while Smith pulled down five boards on the half.
Utah owned the second half, using an early 9-0 run to go up by 21 and put the game away for good. In fact, the Utes equaled their 28 points from the first half in the first 7:40 of the second half. Utah shot 43 percent from the field on the half, compared to the 33 percent of NAU.
