SALT LAKE CITY -
Utah head football coach Urban Meyer has filled out his coaching staff by hiring Brent Myers from the University of Washington as his assistant head coach. Myers will also coach the offensive guards and centers.
"It's great for the University of Utah to hire one of the most respected coaches out in this part of the country," said Meyer about his new right hand man. "Brent has been a coordinator and he's coached at some very successful places. He has some great recruiting contacts out west. In addition to coaching and recruiting, he will assist me in a variety of administrative areas as my assistant head coach."
Washington Head Coach Rick Neuheisel also praised his outgoing offensive line coach. "I want to wish Brent the best at Utah. He did a fine job of coaching and was a valuable recruiter for us. He had a bunch of young linemen to work with these past two seasons and did a nice job in their development. Urban (Meyer) is getting a fine coach and Brent will be able to take on some added duties at Utah as the assistant head coach. This sounds like a good step for Brent."
A 21-year veteran of college coaching, Myers spent the last three seasons as the offensive line coach at Washington. From 1998-99, he was the offensive coordinator at Boise State. His other NCAA coaching experience was at Eastern Washington (1982-83 and 1985-91), Southern Illinois (1984) and Northern Arizona (1992-97).
Myers had considerable success at each place, most recently at Washington from 2000-02. His first year, he coached what was considered one of the nation's best blocking units for the Pac-10 and Rose Bowl champion Huskies. Two senior linemen, Elliot Silvers and Chad Ward, were all-Pac-10 selections who went on to be drafted by NFL teams. Ward also won the Morris Trophy, given to the Pac-10's top lineman, and was a second-team All-American. Myers also coached an all-Pac-10 player in 2001 (Kyle Benn) and 2002 (Nick Newton). The 2002 line blocked for the most prolific passing team in Pac-10 history (4,458 yards).
Myers went to UW after two seasons at Boise State, where he was the offensive line coach in 1998 and offensive coordinator in 1999 for a program that beat Utah both years. The 1999 Broncos won the Big West Conference championship and beat Louisville in the Humanitarian Bowl. Boise State led the Big West in offense that year, averaging 33 points and more than 414 yards per game in total offense while posting a 10-3 record.
From 1992-97, Myers assisted at Northern Arizona, working with the linebackers for one year before moving to the offensive line. He was named associate head coach in 1994 and offensive coordinator in 1996, when the Lumberjacks led the nation in total offense and scoring and became the first Division I team to have a 3,000-yard passer (Travis Brown) and a 2,000-yard rusher (Archie Ammerson) in the same season. That year, Myers was honored as NCAA I-AA Offensive Coordinator of the Year by the AFCA.
Myers began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, Eastern Washington, from 1982-83. He went to Southern Illinois in 1984 as the offensive line coach, before returning to EWU in 1985. From 1985-91, he coached a variety of positions, including the tight ends, offensive line, linebackers and defensive line.
Myers earned his undergraduate and master's degrees from EWU, where he was a Division II honorable mention All-American. He attended Columbia Basin Junior College from 1978-79 and helped his team to the 1978 juco national championship as the starting center on the offensive line.
The Seattle native and his wife Susan have a six-year-old daughter, Morgan.
