Utah Football Team Will Hold Red-White Game This Saturday

LAST WEEK OF SPRING DRILLS
New Utah Head Coach Urban Meyer and the Utes are down to their last week of spring drills, a week which will conclude with a Red-White game on Saturday. Prior to the spring game, which will start at noon in Rice-Eccles Stadium (see Red-White game for more details), the Utes will hold practices on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.RED-WHITE GAME
The Red-White game will be held on Saturday, Apr. 19 from noon-2 p.m. in Rice-Eccles Stadium. Admission and parking are free. The Red-White game will be played under true game conditions vs. a controlled scrimmage. The only major exceptions to a real game are that the quarterbacks will not be "live" and there will not be any kickoffs or punt returns. The staff will "draft" teams, probably on Thursday.REVIEWING SCRIMMAGE NO. 2
While the No. 1 defense still held the upper hand, the offense made huge strides in the second scrimmage of the spring, last Saturday. Quarterback Brett Elliott completed 6-6 passes for 70 yards and led his unit to a touchdown on the first drive of the day against the second string defense. Scoring the touchdown was Marty Johnson, who led all rushers with 8 rushes for 57 yards, including a 32-yard touchdown run up the middle. Receiver Jerome Wright (3 receptions for 35 yards), tight end Ben Moa (3 catches for 46 yards) and QB Lance Rice (2-2 for 28 yards) also fared well. Defensively, Shaun Harper had an interception and a pass breakup and Anthony White had his second pick in as many scrimmages. Ray Holdcraft recorded a sack, while Antonio Young, Bo Nagahi and Aaron Bryant all contributed pass breakups.SPRING ACHES
Players who will not see action in the spring game include: starting wide receiver Travis LaTendresse (leg), all-conference defensive end Jason Kaufusi (shoulder), tight end J.D. Jorgensen (shoulder), cornerback Shayne Scruggs (shoulder), starting strong safety Dave Revill (back) and offensive guard Siuaki Livai (neck). Doubtful to play are running back Rob Sirstins (ankle) and receiver Lynzell Jackson (ribs). Questionable are starting free safety Morgan Scalley (shoulder) and safety Kawika Casco (ankle).HEAD COACH URBAN MEYER
Urban Meyer is in his first spring as Utah's head coach after an impressive two-year stint at Bowling Green. Meyer led BGSU to a 17-6 record in two years and engineered the biggest turnaround in NCAA Division I football as a first-year head coach in 2001. The 2001 Mid America Conference Coach of the Year went 5-0 against Bowl Championship Series teams in his time at BG, and his 2002 Falcon team was ranked in the top 25 for five weeks. In leading BGSU to a 9-3 record last season, Meyer's offense finished third in the country in scoring, averaging 40.8 yards per game. Prior to his successful head coaching start at BGSU, Meyer served assistantships at Notre Dame (1996-2000), Colorado State (1990-95), Illinois State (1988-89) and Ohio State (1986-87).MEYER SAYS
"The spring game is going to be a lot of fun, but there will be a winner and loser. It's going to be competitive. It will be a game situation to reward the players for a good spring. We will start every drive on the 35-yard line. We won't have kickoffs and we'll fair catch every punt, but everything else should be game-like.It's not a controlled scrimmage. It will be fast-it won't be a four-hour game. We're going to let it go. We're not going to save stuff, although we will run our base offense since we still have a long way to go.
Monday and Wednesday, we'll go at it really hard in practice. Friday, we'll just be in shorts doing things to get the team ready for the game on Saturday.
Last Saturday's scrimmage was very competitive. The kids had a great attitude and our offense finally resembled an offense. I was very pleased with the players.
It's clear that our offense will be non-functional next fall unless the players work out hard all summer. They need to work as hard or harder than anyone in the country. They didn't understand the tempo we talked to them about until we started practice. The first week, we were non-functional offensively. Now they know what we're talking about and what it takes. I don't hold their (conditioning) against them now, because they didn't understand what we were asking, but I will in August if they don't come back ready. They have an obligation to this team."
