HEAVY PRACTICE SCHEDULE AWAITS UTES
After calling off one of last week's practices due to bad weather, the Utes will face five days of practice this week to make up for it. Utah will practice on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, with the second scrimmage of the spring scheduled for Saturday. The scrimmage will run from 10 a.m.-noon in Rice-Eccles Stadium. Practice locations are TBA and media wishing to attend should call the sports information office for daily updates.RED-WHITE GAME
The Red-White game will be held on Saturday, Apr. 19 at noon in Rice-Eccles Stadium. It is free of charge the public.DEFENSIVE STANCES
Zach Tune has moved up to a co-starting position on the two deep with Ray Holdcraft at "Mac" linebacker. Corey Dodds, the starting "stud" linebacker, is also in the two deep at open end this week.OFFENSIVE MOVES
Starting 'Z' receiver Travis LaTendresse will miss the remainder of spring ball after suffering a leg injury in practice last week. Replacing him as the starter this week is junior Ryan Honea. Senior Edwin Benton is currently No. 3 at halfback, replacing the injured Rob Sirstins (hamstring). Starting offensive guard Chris Kemoeatu hopes to get his first crack at practice this week. Kemoeatu has been sidelined with a kidney infection.SCRIMMAGE NO. 1
The defense dominated the first scrimmage of the spring on April 5 under cold, wet weather conditions. Particularly impressive was the defensive backfield. Safety Anthony White, who applied some big hits, contributed a pass breakup and forced a fumble. Cornerback Marvin Caruthers had 2 pass breakups and corner Arnold Parker had a sack. Offensively, Brett Elliott had the best numbers of the three quarterbacks, completing 4-8 passes for 80 yards and directing Utah's only touchdown drive. Running back Marty Johnson rushed 9 times for 47 yards and 1 TD. Receiver Steven Savoy had 3 catches for 73 yards.SPRING ACHES
Starting wide receiver Travis LaTendresse is out for the remainder of spring ball with a leg injury, joining three players with shoulder injuries on the sidelines: all-conference senior defensive end Jason Kaufusi, junior tight end J.D. Jorgensen and senior cornerback Shayne Scruggs. Questionable this week is starting right guard Chris Kemoeatu (kidney infection). Running back Rob Sirtsins (hamstring) and strong safety Dave Revill (back) are limited.HEAD COACH URBAN MEYER
Urban Meyer is in his first spring as Utah's head coach after an impressive two-year stint at Bowling Green. Meyer led BGSU to a 17-6 record in two years and engineered the biggest turnaround in NCAA Division I football as a first-year head coach in 2001. The 2001 Mid America Conference Coach of the Year went 5-0 against Bowl Championship Series teams in his time at BG, and his 2002 Falcon team was ranked in the top 25 for five weeks. In leading BGSU to a 9-3 record last season, Meyer's offense finished third in the country in scoring, averaging 40.8 yards per game. Prior to his successful head coaching start at BGSU, Meyer served assistantships at Notre Dame (1996-2000), Colorado State (1990-95), Illinois State (1988-89) and Ohio State (1986-87).MEYER SAYS
"I was hoping we'd be a little further along in our base offense so we are going to slow down on installation and concentrate on improving our base run game. That is our No. 1 priority. The No. 2 priority is to identify playmakers on offense. Defensively, we need to work to become better tacklers. We're also going to add kickoff returns to special teams later in the week."I liked the enthusiasm in the scrimmage last Saturday. The guys came out on a wet, cold Saturday morning and really flew around, tried hard and had fun. In this Saturday's scrimmage, we'll try to put in some situations like the two-minute offense. That is something that will take a lot of work and we need to start working on it now because it is something that is very difficult to simulate without playing against the defense. Otherwise, this week's scrimmage will be very similar in format to last week's.
