Three Utah Basketball Players Named Academic All-MWC

SALT LAKE CITY - Senior Trace Caton, freshman Chris Jackson and junior Nick Jacobson of the Runnin' Ute men's basketball team have been named to the 2002-03 Academic All-Mountain West team.
Caton and Jackson earned further distinction by being named Mountain West Conference Scholar Athletes with at least a 3.50 cumulative GPA.
Utah has had an academic all-conference honoree every year during Rick Majerus' 14-year tenure. This is the 10th time the Utes have had multiple academic all-conference honorees. In all, Utah players have earned academic all-conference recognition 38 times since 1989-90.
During the 2003 spring semester, Jackson, Jacobson and freshman Tim Drisdom were named to the University of Utah academic honor roll with at least a 3.00 GPA or better. Jackson was also placed on the Dean's List with a 4.00 GPA. "In my estimation, Tim Drisdom's academic achievements as a freshman far overshadow his play on the court," commented Majerus. "It's nice to see him succeed on both sides of the ledger."
"Academic endeavor and accomplishment have always been the cornerstone of the Utah basketball program," said Majerus. "I am very proud of the fact that during my tenure the student-athletes have prioritized their education in such a manner. And in conjunction with that, this recognition is especially meaningful."
"I anticipate Nick Jacobson becoming an Academic All-American, and am quite confident that next year both he and senior Tim Frost will graduate on the honor roll. We had a tremendous season with a 25-8 record that entailed winning a conference championship, an appearance in the second round of the NCAA Tournament and culminating with the most important aspect of all, the academic success of the team in its entirety. Although others have not distinguished themselves at this high level of achievement, I am equally proud of the other returning members of the team-Tim Frost, Richard Chaney and Bryant Markson-who have excelled as well in the classroom, approximating "B" averages. The season is always ongoing in my mind until the grades are in. All the returning members of this year's team should be proud of their academic effort and achievement."
"I would also like to commend the University of Utah faculty for their teaching prowess and effort. Although we are a research institution, the commitment and involvement of the faculty characterize the undergraduate education here; my players have been the beneficiaries of this commitment. In conjunction with our academic coordinator, Rob Rainey, I offer my heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the finest faculty anywhere, as well as to Rob and the assistant coaches who helped our players understand the importance of academic achievement."
