SALT LAKE CITY -
Utah senior running back Marty Johnson will be suspended for at least one game this fall, first-year Utah Head Coach Urban Meyer announced today after Johnson pled guilty to two class B misdemeanors. The charges against Johnson, which were for driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident, stemmed from an incident on Oct. 27, 2002, nearly two months prior to Meyer's hiring. Johnson will be sentenced on July 28.
"Although this situation occurred before the current coaching staff was hired, I felt it was appropriate for us to discipline him," says Meyer. "I have placed Marty on probation and he will be suspended for up to two games. If he stays out of any kind of trouble, his suspension will be reduced to one game."
Meyer will determine what game or games Johnson will miss at a later date.
Johnson does not wish to comment on the suspension. Until the time his suspension may be reduced, there will be no further statements from Meyer or University officials. Contact Liz Abel, assistant director of athletics, with any questions.
