SALT LAKE CITY - The first-string offense scored on the first possession - a three-play, 65-yard drive - in the Utes' first scrimmage, held Tuesday in Rice-Eccles Stadium.
The three scholarship quarterbacks took turns with the first-and second-string offense. Brett Elliott always worked with the No. 1 unit, and Alex Smith worked a couple of series' with them, but primarily worked with the No. 2 offense, as did Lance Rice.
Elliott was 2-of-5 for 52 yards and a touchdown, while Smith was 5-of-11 for 88 yards and a touchdown. Rice was 4-of-15 for 58 yards. Both Smith and Elliott also threw interceptions.
Brandon Warfield, who carried the ball 13 times for 77 yards, led the running game. Mike Liti added 46 yards on 15 carries and Kyle Brady ran for 51 yards on seven carries, including a 28-yard gain.
Travis LaTendresse led the receiving corps with five receptions for 86 yards. Steven Savoy caught three passes for 65 yards, including a 37-yard touchdown, and Paris Warren had one catch, a 23-yard touchdown reception.
Defensively, Kawika Casco and Eric Weddle both had interceptions that each returned for a touchdown. Weddle's was for 65 yards, and Casco returned it 50 yards for the score. Lewis Powell and Tevita Kemoeatu each recovered fumbles.
Sione Pouha and Arnold Parker each had a sack, and four others - Shaun Harper, Bo Nagahi, Ray Holdcraft and Reza Williams - had pass break-ups. Williams also forced a fumble, while Willie Sao had two pass deflections at the line of scrimmage.
Utah opens the season on Thursday, Aug. 28, at home against Utah State. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
