"I like our effort tonight - we made it a game down the stretch," Head Coach Elaine Elliott said. "Things just went their way. They made a couple of big plays and we didn't. There's no embarrassment losing to this team in this building."
Sophomore All-America candidate Kim Smith led Utah with her second consecutive double-double, finishing with 13 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. She also added three assists. Senior Kelsy Stireman had 13 points and three steals, while senior Carley Marshall finished with 12 points, six rebounds and a career-high six assists. The Utes cut the lead to one on a Wood trey, but the Lady Griz then outscored Utah 14-2 to take a 24-11 lead. Utah, which trailed by as many as 13, closed out the half with a 10-0 run to go into the locker room down by just two, 31-29.
Utah shot 40 percent from the field on the half, while Montana connected on 50 percent of its shots. The Utes' saving grace was rebounds, as Utah out-rebounded a much larger Lady Griz team 18-10 on the half. Wood led the Utes with six points on the half, followed by Marshall and Stireman with five apiece. Smith pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds on the half.
The Utes quickly tied the game at 31 and again at 33 to start the second half, but the Lady Griz then went on an 8-0 run to go up 41-33. The Montana lead remained at five for some time before Utah scored back-to-back three-pointers to take its first lead since early in the first half. The game remained close for the remainder, with no team leading by more than three. Thorburn's last second three-point attempt came up short, and the Utes lost by three, 61-58.
