THIS WEEK:
The University of Utah men's tennis team opens its season this weekend in a match against non-conference opponent Northwestern. On Saturday, Jan. 17, the Utes will face the Wildcats at 5:00 p.m. The match will be held at the Eccles Tennis Center.
LAST SEASON:
Last year, the Utes placed fifth in the Mountain West Conference with a 1-4 mark. Utah finished the season with an overall record of 12-14. As a junior last year, Roeland Brateanu played at the No. 1 and 2 spots and finished with a 14-21 record. Then freshman, Nick Coutts played at the middle of the lineup and posted a 15-11 record.
UTE NEWCOMERS:
Utah made three additions to the team roster this year, freshmen Miron Mann, Jason Yap and Dantley Young.
SCOUTING THE WILDCATS:
The Wildcats begin their season against Weber State on Jan. 16, before taking on the Utes. Northwestern fared well in fall tournament play which included the Adidas Invitational, the ITA All-American tournament, and the Big Ten Singles Championships. Last year, the Wildcats compiled a 10-12 overall record and a 3-7 mark in the Big Ten. This season the lineup includes junior Tommy Hanus, who had a 20-16 record at the No. 1 spot last year and was ranked 76.
QUOTING ASSISTANT COACH Graeme Cox:
"Northwestern is a strong Big Ten tennis school that we are happy to have coming to play us in Salt Lake. Our team came back early from their Christmas break to prepare for this match and have been working extremely hard to get ready."
"We are looking forward to the challenge of playing such a tough season opener and are optimistic about the outcome."
