SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah men and women's basketball teams will both take part for the first time in the annual "Night with the Utes," scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. in the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
The event is free to the public and will give Utah a sneak-peek of the men and women's teams for 2004-05. The Ute men, under first-year head coach Ray Giacoletti, tip-off the night's festivities with a 20-minute scrimmage. The Ute women will also take part in a 10-minute scrimmage. Both teams will then compete in a 3-point shootout, followed by a celebrity 2-ball contest featuring members of the Salt Lake sports media.
After the contests, Giacoletti and Elaine Elliott, beginning her 22nd season as the head coach of the Ute women's team, will preview their upcoming seasons. Players and coaches will be available to sign autographs and pose for pictures. Matt Thomas, the new "Voice of the Utes" on Hot Ticket 700, will emcee the event.
The Ute men's team returns three starters and five other lettermen for the 2004-05 season. Last year Utah went 24-9, won the Mountain West Conference Tournament title and advanced to three consecutive NCAA Tournaments. Marc Jackson, a guard from Olympus High School, has rejoined the team for his senior season. Jackson earned second-team all-Mountain West Conference honors in 2002-03, averaging 9.3 points, 2.8 assists and 2.3 rebounds per game.
Sophomore center/forward Andrew Bogut, the 2003-04 Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year and a second team all-league pick, is one of the three returning starters. Bogut was second on the team in scoring (12.5 ppg), and first in both rebounding (9.9 rpg) and blocked shots (44) last season. The native of Melbourne, Australia, was a starter for the Aussies in the 2004 Summer Olympic Games. Junior forward Richard Chaney was third on the team in scoring (9.5 ppg)in 2003-04, shooting 41.5 percent from three-point range and 82.2 percent at the line. Junior guard Tim Drisdom has started all but one game the last two years. The Artesia, Calif., native led the Utes in assists (3.6 apg) and steals (35) last season while averaging 6.1 points.
The Runnin' Utes return four other lettermen from last season in sophomore forward Justin Hawkins, junior center Chris Jackson, junior forward Bryant Markson and sophomore forward Jonas Langvad. Utah's nonconference schedule features the Great Alaska Shootout, a road game at Arizona, and home games with Colorado (Dec. 30) and LSU (Jan. 2).
The Utah men open the exhibition season Nov. 6 with a 7 p.m. contest against Carroll College. The Runnin' Utes will finish exhibition play against Western State College at Noon on Nov. 13.
The Ute women are coming off a second consecutive 24-7 campaign and a share of the MWC Regular Season Championship. Elliott's squad will be led by Preseason All-American and two-time Mountain West Conference Player of the Year Kim Smith. Shona Thorburn, a two-time second-team all-MWC honoree also returns.
Smith, a junior from Mission, British Columbia, Canada, averaged 15.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game last season. She was only the second Utah sophomore ever to reach the 1,000-point plateau last season. Thorburn, also a junior, was second on the squad in scoring last season, averaging 12.0 points per contest. She led the Utes with 123 assists. Both Smith and Thorburn spent the last two summers competing for the Canadian Senior National Team.
The Utah women will face one of the toughest schedules they've seen in recent years. Six Ute opponents were in the NCAA Tournament last season. Two preseason nationally-ranked squads will visit the Huntsman Center this season. Utah opens the regular season with Stanford, a team ranked as high as No. 7 in many preseason polls. Nationally-ranked Oklahoma visits Salt Lake City later in the season.
Fans will have a chance to see the Ute women in two exhibition contests prior to the regular season. Utah hosts Baden Sports at 7 p.m. on Nov. 2 and takes the National Women's Basketball League All-Stars on Nov. 13, following the men's exhibition game at Noon.
