Utah plays in the Great Alaska Shootout in Anchorage next Wednesday through Saturday (Nov. 24-27). The Utes play their first round game against No. 22 Washington on Thursday (Nov. 25) at 6:00 p.m. (AST) on ESPN2.

Quickly On Utah
Utah (0-0) opens its regular season against Stony Brook (0-0) on Friday at 8:07 p.m. (MST) in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The game will follow the Utah vs. Stanford women's basketball game, which begins at 6:00 p.m. (MST). The Runnin' Utes won both of their exhibition games, defeating Carroll College 86-62 on Nov. 6 and Western State College 87-48 on Nov. 13.

First year head coach Ray Giacoletti has three returning starters and five other lettermen on his 2004-05 roster. Last season, Utah went 24-9 overall and placed third in the Mountain West Conference during the regular season with a 9-5 record. Utah won the Mountain West Conference Tournament title and received the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The only senior on the roster is guard Marc Jackson (6-1, 175), who is back with the Utes after taking off last season. Jackson earned second team all-Mountain West Conference honors as a sophomore in 2002-03. He averaged 9.3 points, 2.8 assists and 2.3 rebounds in 22.0 minutes per game as a non-starter. Sophomore forward/center Andrew Bogut (7-0, 240), the 2003-04 Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year and a second team all-league pick, is one of the three returning starters. Bogut was second on the team in scoring (12.5 ppg), and first in both rebounding (9.9 rpg) and blocked shots (44) last season. Junior forward Richard Chaney (6-4, 195) started 31 of 33 games last season. The Los Angeles, Calif., native was third on the team in scoring (9.5 ppg), shooting 49.4 percent from the field, 41.5 percent from three-point range and 82.2 percent at the line. Junior Tim Drisdom (6-3, 210) has started all but one game the last two years at point guard. The Artesia, Calif., native led the Utes in assists (3.6 apg) and steals (35) last season. He also averaged 6.1 points, shooting 34.0 percent from three-point range and 78.9 percent from the free throw line, and 3.7 rebounds.

The Utes also return four other lettermen from last season. Sophomore forward Justin Hawkins (6-5, 220) was the Utes' most productive player off the bench, averaging 5.3 points and 3.2 rebounds. Junior center Chris Jackson (6-11, 245) averaged 3.4 points and 2.6 rebounds in 12.5 minutes per game last season. He missed the final 10 games after undergoing back surgery. Junior forward Bryant Markson (6-6, 190) from Monrovia, Calif., averaged 2.2 points and 1.7 rebounds in 12.0 minutes per game. Sophomore forward Jonas Langvad (6-9, 230), who came to the U. from Skovlunde, Denmark, averaged 1.6 points and 1.8 rebounds while appearing in eight games.

From The Training Room
? Junior guard Tim Drisdom sprained his right ankle during the team's "Night with the Utes" scrimmage on Oct. 28. Drisdom returned to practice on a limited basis Monday and Tuesday of this week, and is questionable for the season opener against Stony Brook on Friday.

Nevill Redshirting
Freshman center Luke Nevill, a native of Perth, Australia, is expected to redshirt this season. He did not suit up for the Utes' exhibition games. Ray Giacoletti has been impressed with Nevill in practice and had a difficult time making the decision. But, Nevill was not projected to play a lot of minutes this season, and it was determined best to save the year of eligibility. "He's only played four years," said Giacoletti. "He has the chance to be real good."

For Openers
? Utah is 73-23 (.760) in season openers all-time and 65-10 (.867) in season openers played at home. The Utes have won eight season openers in a row, last falling in 1995-96 to Kansas on Nov. 25 in the BCI Classic at Kemper Arena in Kansas City.

? The Utes are 83-13 (.865) all-time in home openers. Utah has won 15 home openers in a row, last losing in 1988-89 to Cal State Fullerton on Dec. 1.

? Ray Giacoletti makes his regular-season debut on Friday. Utah's 12 previous head coaches went 6-6 in their opening games.

Scouting Stony Brook
The Seawolves (0-0) open the regular season against the Utes on Friday. Stony Brook went 10-20 overall and placed eighth in the America East Conference with a 5-13 record last season.

Three starters return from last season. Sophomore guard Mitchell Beauford (6-0, 185) averaged 10.1 points and 2.4 rebounds per game, and shot 33.3 percent from three-point range (18-for-54) in 2003-04. Sophomore forward Mike Popoko (6-5, 190) averaged 8.4 points and 5.2 boards, and blocked 20 shots. Senior Cori Spencer (6-7, 245) averaged 10.3 points and 4.8 rebounds per game last season.

Last season, Stony Brook shot 42.3 percent from the field, 31.6 percent from three-point range and 68.9 percent from the free throw line. The Seawolves averaged 62.6 points, 32.7 rebounds, 10.7 assists and 15.2 turnovers per game.

Head Coach Nick Macarchuk
Nick Macarchuk is entering his sixth season at Stony Brook with a 52-91 record. His career mark is 362-411 as he begins his 28th year in coaching. Prior to taking over at Stony Brook, Macarchuk was the head coach at Fordham for 13 years (1987-99). He led Fordham to the NCAA Tournament in 1992, four NIT appearances and Patriot League regular-season titles in 1991 and `92. Macarchuk was also the head coach at Canisius from 1977-87 and as assistant coach at Providence from 1972-77.

Utah vs. Stony Brook Series Notes
? Utah and Stony Brook meet for the third time on Friday. The Utes have won the first two games.

? Last season, the Utes won 51-48 on Nov. 23 in Long Island. In the first meeting in the series, Utah defeated Stony Brook 74-45 on Nov. 29, 1999 in Salt Lake City. ? Utah is 3-0 against teams from the America East Conference. In addition to defeating Stony Brook twice, the Utes won their only meeting with Northeastern, winning in the NCAA Tournament on March 15, 1981.

Last Meeting
Richard Chaney scored 15 of his 21 points in the second half--including a go-ahead three-point basket--as Utah rallied for a 51-48 victory over Stony Brook last season on Nov. 23 in Long Island. Nick Jacobson added 11 points for the Utes, hitting 3-of-6 treys. D.J. Munir had 12 points to lead the Seawolves. His pair of free throws gave them a 44-39 advantage with 5:28 to play. Utah then nailed four three-pointers, including two by Chaney, in a 12-2 rally. His first three-pointer narrowed the margin to 46-45 with 2:23 remaining.

Chaney then hit the go-ahead three-ball with 1:16 to play, giving Utah the lead for good. Jacobson followed with the fourth straight three-pointer to make it 51-46 with 7.5 seconds remaining.

Utah outshot Stony Brook 48.8 to 39.0 percent and made 7-of-14 threes to the Seawolves' 3-of-7 effort from behind the arc. The Utes also had a 31 to 21 edge on the boards, but also committed 16 turnovers--10 coming in the first half.

Exhibition Game #2 Rewind
Andrew Bogut racked up 23 points and 11 rebounds in last Saturday afternoon's 87-48 exhibition victory over Western State (Colo.) at the Huntsman Center. Utah shot a blistering 60.7 percent from the field in the 39-point victory.

Strong outside shooting kept Western State in the contest through the early portions of the first half. The Mountaineers hit four three-pointers in the first 10 minutes of the contest. Western State trailed by just five points (23-18) midway through the first half.

But a 10-0 Utah run over the next three minutes was the beginning of the end, giving the U. a 33-18 lead. Bogut scored four points during the spurt. A Richard Chaney three-pointer with 4:05 left in the first half pushed the Utah advantage to 20 points, 40-20. The Utes took a 41-26 lead into the locker room at the intermission. Utah opened the second half with an 18-2 outburst, capped by Bogut's traditional three-point play to make it 59-28.

Junior center Chris Jackson scored 10 of his 12 points in the second half for Utah. Chaney was the only other Ute in double figures. Eleven of his 18 points were in the first 20 minutes. Chaney narrowly missed a double-double, pulling down nine rebounds.

Two Western State players were in double figures. Carleton Goggins came off the bench for a team-high 11 points, while Ryan Jobe tacked on 10.

Utah held the Mountaineers to just less than 35 percent from the field. The Utes outrebounded Western State 47-21 and outscored the Mountaineers 58-10 in the paint.

Utes Receiving Votes In AP And ESPN/USA Today Polls
? Utah had 31 votes to rank tied for 30th in the Associated Press preseason poll. Washington, the Utes' first round opponent in the Great Alaska Shootout, is No. 22. Alabama was ranked 18th and Oklahoma received 28 votes to come in 33rd; both teams are in the Great Alaska Shootout field. Arizona, which will host the Utes in Tucson, Ariz., on Dec. 11, is ranked 10th. UNLV of the Mountain West Conference is receiving four votes to rank 44th.

? The Utes received six votes to rank 34th in the ESPN/USA Today Top 25 preseason poll. Washington is ranked 24th. Alabama and Oklahoma are ranked 18th and 30th, respectively. Arizona is ranked 11th. UNLV garnered nine votes to rank 33rd.

They've Got The License To Shoot
Want to have the go-ahead to shoot a three-pointer if you play for the Utes? You have to earn your license first. A Ute player earns his "License to Shoot" from the coaching staff by making 35 of 50 three-pointers from all over the floor during a drill that can be attempted once a day. It must be completed five times before the season.

Utes who have earned their "License to Shoot" for this season are Andrew Bogut, Richard Chaney, Tim Drisdom, Casey Iverson, Justin Hawkins, Marc Jackson, Jonas Langvad and Bryant Markson.

Runnin' Utes Second In MWC Preseason Poll
Utah was placed second in the Mountain West Conference preseason media poll. Runnin' Ute sophomore center/forward Andrew Bogut was named to the preseason all-MWC team.

The league media selected UNLV to claim the Mountain West Conference title, marking the first time the Runnin' Rebels were picked first in the MWC preseason poll. UNLV tallied 182 total points and 14 of 25 first-place votes. Utah, the defending MWC Tournament champion, earned seven first-place votes and finished second in the poll with 169 points. Defending MWC regular season champion Air Force came in third--its highest-ever pick in the MWC poll--with 142 points and four first-place votes. New Mexico placed fourth with 122 points, followed by BYU (92), Colorado State (87), San Diego State (71) and Wyoming (35).
