Quickly On Utah
Utah (1-1) takes on High Point (1-1) in the consolation semifinal round of the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout in Anchorage on Friday at 2:00 p.m. (AST). The Utes fell to Washington 78-71 in the quarterfinals of the Great Alaska Shootout on Thursday night after opening the regular season with a 72-63 win over Stony Brook last Friday in Salt Lake City.

First year head coach Ray Giacoletti has three returning starters and five other lettermen on his 2004-05 roster. Last season, Utah went 24-9 overall and placed third in the Mountain West Conference during the regular season with a 9-5 record. Utah won the Mountain West Conference Tournament title and received the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The only senior on the roster is guard Marc Jackson (6-1, 175), who is back with the Utes after taking off last season. Jackson earned second team all-Mountain West Conference honors as a sophomore in 2002-03. He averaged 9.3 points, 2.8 assists and 2.3 rebounds in 22.0 minutes per game as a non-starter. Sophomore forward/center Andrew Bogut (7-0, 240), the 2003-04 Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year and a second team all-league pick, is one of the three returning starters. Bogut was second on the team in scoring (12.5 ppg), and first in both rebounding (9.9 rpg) and blocked shots (44) last season. Junior forward Richard Chaney (6-4, 195) started 31 of 33 games last season. The Los Angeles, Calif., native was third on the team in scoring (9.5 ppg), shooting 49.4 percent from the field, 41.5 percent from three-point range and 82.2 percent at the line. Junior Tim Drisdom (6-3, 210) has started all but two games the last three years at point guard. The Artesia, Calif., native led the Utes in assists (3.6 apg) and steals (35) last season. He also averaged 6.1 points, shooting 34.0 percent from three-point range and 78.9 percent from the free throw line, and 3.7 rebounds.

The Utes also return four other lettermen from last season. Sophomore forward Justin Hawkins (6-5, 220) was the Utes' most productive player off the bench, averaging 5.3 points and 3.2 rebounds. Junior center Chris Jackson (6-11, 245) averaged 3.4 points and 2.6 rebounds in 12.5 minutes per game last season. He missed the final 10 games after undergoing back surgery. Junior forward Bryant Markson (6-6, 190) from Monrovia, Calif., averaged 2.2 points and 1.7 rebounds in 12.0 minutes per game. Sophomore forward Jonas Langvad (6-9, 230), who came to the U. from Skovlunde, Denmark, averaged 1.6 points and 1.8 rebounds while appearing in eight games.

Utes Playing Another Early Season Tournament
This marks the seventh time in the last 11 years that Utah has competed in an exempted early season tournament. The Utes have also competed in the Maui Invitational (1994, 1998, 2002), Puerto Rico Shootout (2000) and the Preseason NIT (1999, 2003). Last season in the Preseason NIT, Utah advanced to the semifinals and the third place game at Madison Square Garden in New York.

The Utes have played in the Great Alaska Shootout once before. In 1988 under Lynn Archibald, Utah went 1-2 in the tournament, losing to Seton Hall (86-68), defeating Iona (109-75) and falling to Florida (77-68).

Scouting High Point
The Panthers (1-1) fell to Oklahoma 93-65 in the quarterfinals of the Great Alaska Shootout on Thursday night. High Point opened the season with a 118-66 win over Southeastern last Saturday in High Point, N.C. High Point returns four starters and nine lettermen from last year's team that went 19-11 and tied for third in the Big South Conference with a 10-6 mark.

Senior forward Danny Gathings (6-6, 205) was the 2003-04 Big South Player of the Year and an honorable mention AP All-American. He averaged 15.8 points and 8.0 rebounds per game last season. Senior guard Zione White (6-3, 175) averaged 13.7 points, 3.8 boards and 2.2 assists per game in 2003-04. Senior center Jerry Echenique (6-6, 260) put up 11.4 points and 6.1 rebounds per contest a year ago.

In the season opener against Southeastern, Gathings had a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds to go with four steals. White led the Panthers with 20 points and seven assists. Against Oklahoma, Echenique had 13 points and nine rebounds. Junior guard Titus Byrd (5-11, 175) had a game-high 16 points while connecting on 3-of-6 three-pointers. Through two games, Titus leads the Panthers in scoring (12.0 ppg), Gathings sets the pace in rebounds (9.0 rpg), and White leads in three-point percentage (3-for-6).

Panthers Head Coach Bart Lundy
Bart Lundy is 20-12 in his second year at High Point and 135-51 in his seventh season as a head coach. Lundy was named the 2004 National Rookie Coach of the Year by collegeinsider.com. Lundy took over at High Point after five highly-successful seasons as the head coach at Queens University of Charlotte, where he led the Royals to a 115-39 record and a pair of NCAA Division II Elite Eight appearances, including a trip to the Final Four in 2003.

About Last Night
Nate Robinson scored 19 of his 29 points in the first half, and No. 22 Washington held off Utah for a 78-71 victory Thursday night in the quarterfinals of the Great Alaska Shootout.

After the Utes tied the game at 66-all with 2:50 left, the Huskies scored nine straight points to take control. Robinson, held to two points for nearly 15 minutes of the second half, hit three big baskets down the stretch to thwart Utah's rally.

Utah's Andrew Bogut, a 7-foot center who is also a member of Australia's Olympic team, scored 23 points, including 19 in the second half as the Utes erased an 11-point deficit. He also led the Utes with 12 rebounds.

Brandon Roy added 25 points for Washington (2-0).

The Huskies used a stifling full-court press to force three turnovers and two 5-second violations in the first five minutes of the game and bolted to a 16-3 lead. Utah (1-1) attempted just six shots in the first eight minutes.

Behind six points by Justin Hawkins, the Utes used a 10-0 run to close within two at 21-19 midway through the half.

After a timeout, Washington answered. Brandon Roy hit a reverse layup and Robinson hit two three-pointers to push the lead back to double digits. Robinson was 5-for-6 from beyond the arc in the first half.

Bogut's layup tied the score at 66, but Robinson hit a layup, led a fast break and blocked a shot to close out the Utes.

Utah Game #2 Notes
? Andrew Bogut had a career-high 23 points and the fourth 20-point game of his career against Washington. He tied a career-best with seven free throws made (in 10 attempts). Bogut also had his 19th career double-figure rebound game and his 16th career double-double. He has had a double-double in both games this year. It was also the eighth time in his 35-game Ute career that Bogut had at least three blocked shots in a game.

? Justin Hawkins had a career-high 18 points in a career-best 38 minutes against the Huskies. He also made 7-of-15 from the field to set career-best marks in makes and attempts. Hawkins' previous career-best in points was 16 against Stony Brook in the 2004-05 season opener. He has six double-figure scoring games in his career.

? Marc Jackson, putting up 11 points, had the 15th double-figure scoring game of his career and the second in two games this season.

? Tim Drisdom had seven assists, just one shy of his career-high of eight. It was the 17th time in his career he had at least five assists.

? By holding Washington to 78 points, Utah has not allowed an opponent to score 80 points in 130 consecutive games that have ended in regulation. The last team to score 80 points on the Utes in a 40-minute game was Wyoming (88) on Feb. 28, 2000 in Laramie, Wyo.
