The 2003 Mountain West Conference all-academic football team, released by the conference office today, contains 17 student-athletes off of Utah's MWC and Liberty Bowl championship team. Junior defensive back Morgan Scalley, a CoSIDA first-team Academic All-American, is making his third appearance on the MWC all-academic team. Scalley, who recorded a 4.0 grade point average in the fall, owns a cumulative GPA of 3.95 in mass communication.
The MWC honor is also the second significant academic accolade for sophomore quarterback Alex Smith and sophomore linebacker Spencer Toone. Smith was named to the CoSIDA District VIII academic first-team, while Toone made the second team. Smith has a 3.82 cumulative in economics and Toone a 3.82 in exercise and sport science.
Joining Scalley, Smith and Toone on the academic all-conference team were: Jesse Boone (3.32 economics and management), Bryan Borreson (3.37 business), Aaron Bryant (3.09 political science), Braden Cooper (3.06 business), Jonathan Fanene (3.10 sociology), Tommy Hackenbruck (3.07 finance), Matt Hansen (3.75 speech communication), Ray Holdcraft (3.01, finance), Matt Kovacevich (3.25 art), Grady Marshall (3.06 business), Bo Nagahi (3.04 business), Max Petersen (3.02 political science), Eric Weddle (3.43 general studies), Reza Williams (3.80 sociology).
To be eligible for MWC academic honors, student-athletes must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better and be a starter or significant contributor.
