ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The No. 25 Utah women's basketball team's hopes of an undefeated conference record were erased tonight at The Pit tonight as New Mexico defeated the Utes 49-46, ending Utah's nine-game winning streak. With the loss, the Utes fall to 19-5 on the year and 9-1 in MWC play.
"It turned out to be an exciting game," Head Coach Elaine Elliott said. "We didn't play with the level of intensity they did for the first 30 minutes of the game. Our kids never quit, never let down, but if we'd have played the whole game like we did for the last 6-8 minutes, it would have been a different story."
"This is a tough place to play," she continued. "It took us a while to get into a rhythm."
Utah shot 32 percent from the field and 30 percent from downtown on the game, compared to the 40 and 37 percent, respectively, of the Lobos. The Utes out-rebounded New Mexico 32 to 31, but turned the ball over 13 times.
Sophomore All-America candidate Kim Smith posted her sixth double-double of the season, finishing with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Shona Thorburn was the only other Ute in double-figure scoring with 11 points. She also pulled down six boards and dished out four assists. Junior Lana Sitterud added nine points, while senior Kelsy Stireman finished with four assists.
The first half was a nightmare for the Utes. Utah shot a first-half season-low 22 percent from the field and was held to a season-low 14 first half points. The Utes were out-rebounded 17 to 16 and turned the ball over seven times. Utah didn't score a field goal for the last 11:18 of the half and was held scoreless for the last 6:10 of the half. New Mexico connected on 41 percent of its shots and had a 5-0 run and two 8-0 runs.
New Mexico extended its lead to 14 points with a trey early in the second half, but Sitterud nailed two three-pointers to cut it to eight (28-20). After another Lobo basket, Utah rattled off seven straight points to cut the lead to four, 31-27. After both teams traded baskets, New Mexico went on a 7-0 run to extend its lead back to double digits, 40-29. The Utes battled back, using a 10-0 run to tie the game at 44 apiece. The Lobos answered with five straight points to take a five-point lead. A pair of Smith free throws cut it to three, and after a missed shot by New Mexico, the Utes got the rebound, came down the court, but a Stireman three was off the mark.
Utah shot 43 percent from the field and 39 percent from three-point range on the half. The Utes pulled down 16 rebounds, compared to the 14 of the Lobos.
