THIS WEEK: The University of Utah men's tennis team heads to California to take on Saint Mary's College of California, the University of San Francisco, Stanford University, and the University of California. The Utes match up against Saint Mary's on Feb. 21 at noon, San Francisco on Feb. 23 at 2:00 p.m., Stanford on Feb. 24 at 1:30 p.m., and California on Feb. 25 at 1:30 p.m.
REVIEWING LAST WEEK: The Utes are coming off a grueling 7-0 loss to Boise State at home Feb. 19. Utah only picked up one win, which was at the No. 3 doubles. Sophomore Nick Coutts and freshman Jason Yap defeated Beck Roghaar and Ehren Vaughan (9-7). Despite the effort, Utah did not have any wins in the singles.Utah drops 4-2 on the season.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION: Saint Mary's College of California has a 2-3 mark on the season. The Gaels have two wins over Sonoma State and the University of Hawaii. The losses have been to Denver, Cal Poly, and to the tough Pepperdine squad.
The University of San Francisco is 3-5 on the season. The Dons held on to 4-3 wins over Hawaii, Santa Clara, and Loyola Marymount. San Francisco was topped by Fresno, Cal Poly, New Mexico, San Diego, and San Diego State.
Stanford is ranked No. 3 in the nation and has compiled a 4-2 record this season. The Cardinals two losses are to No. 1 Illinois and No. 23 Rice. Of the six opponents Stanford has faced this year, five have been ranked in the top 50. The Cardinals have fended off Tulsa with a 6-1win, Hawaii with a 5-1win, No. 13 Texas with a 4-3 win, and No. 4 Vanderbilt with a 4-3 win.
Currently Cal has a No. 11 ranking in the ITA poll. The Golden Bears have a 1-3 overall record with losses to No. 9 Texas A&M, No. 23 Rice, and Pepperdine. Cal blanked No. 13 Texas 4-1 to pick up their one win.
QUOTING ASSISTANT COACH Graeme Cox: "The team is embarking on a very tough four match road trip. Apart from playing perennial top ten programs Stanford and Cal we are also matching up against strong St Mary's and USF teams."
