DENVER, Colo. - The University of Utah men's tennis team fell to No. 75 Denver 6-1 in the Stapleton Tennis Pavilion.
Utah fared well in doubles but did not capture the point. The only win came at the No. 3 when freshman Jason Yap and sophomore Nick Coutts held on to an (8-4) victory over Urban Ljubic and Viktor Zetterholm.Senior Roeland Brateanu and freshman Miron Mann teamed up at the No. 1 but lost to Nejc Smole and Hans Peter Gaber (8-6). Sophomore Tomasz Gryzb and freshman Ryan Scott came up short against Niki Popovic and Jason Tan with an (8-5) loss at the No. 2.
The Pioneers nearly swept in the singles. However, in the effort the Utes picked up one win. Brateanu took care of Smole (7-6, 7-6) at the No. 1. At the No. 2, Gryzb was downed by Gaber (6-3, 7-5). Mann fought hard at the No. 3 and it took Ljubic three sets to beat him (7-5, 6-7, 1-0). Yap fell to Zetterholm (6-1, 6-2) at the No. 4 and Coutts fell to Tan (6-3, 6-4) at the No. 5. At the No. 6, Scott was crushed by Popovic (6-4, 6-2).
