SALT LAKE CITY - Head Coach Urban Meyer was pleased with his team's performance in the first official scrimmage of the spring season, held this morning at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
"The intensity was there today," Meyer said. "Our guys came out and performed. We have decreased our plays and time, but we are performing well. We mixed in some tough plays and the competition was at a high level."
Quarterback Alex Smith was 6-15 for 93 yards on the day, including a 35-yard pass to Steve Savoy.
Junior Adam Madsen was 1-9 for 29 yards, while Brigham Au was 2-5 for 23 yards on the day. "I think Madsen has moved ahead of Brigham at the quarterback spot," Meyer noted.
Sophomore running back Mike Liti led the running game with 52 yards on eight carries, while Smith finished with 42 yards rushing. "Liti is a better football player this year," Meyer said. "Both Liti and Smith have increased their weight."
Junior college transfer Justin Walker had 27 yards on four carries, but it was wide receiver Paris Warren that scored the only touchdown of the day on a 27-yard rush.
Junior John Madsen led the receiving corps with 45 yards on two catches, while Savoy finished with 42 yards on two receptions. Warren caught two passes for 32 yards. "We are going to look at throwing the ball downfield this season," Meyer noted.
The Ute defense batted down three pass attempts (Tim Harris, Sione Pouha and Shaun Harper), recorded two sacks (Braden Cooper and Tommy Hackenbruck) and had three tackles for a loss (Spencer Toone, Malakai Mokofisi and Joe Jiannoni).
