Athlon Gives Utah Football No. 16 Preseason Ranking

SALT LAKE CITY -
Athlon Sports, which releases the name of one team a day in its annual Top 25 preseason football rankings, has picked the University of Utah at No. 16, the magazine announced today. Athlon's complete review on the Utes can be found at www.athlonsports.com. The magazine featuring the Utes-with junior quarterback Alex Smith on the cover-will hit the stands on June 7. Magazines are available for pre-order at the publication's website.
Athlon also picked Utah to defend its 2003 Mountain West Conference title. Several Utes were cited by the prominent sports annual on its preseason all-conference team. Selected to the first team were Smith, wide receiver Paris Warren, defensive tackle Steve Fifita, defensive back Morgan Scalley and kick returner Bo Nagahi.
Utes named to the second team were offensive lineman Chris Kemoeatu, defensive lineman Sione Pouha and defensive back Eric Weddle. Defensive lineman Randy Faletoi was projected as the No. 6 incoming freshman in the conference.
Athlon rated Utah's wide receivers as best in the MWC and 10th best in the nation. Utah's quarterbacks and defensive line were ranked No. 1 in the MWC and Utah's defensive backs No. 2.
