Construction Begins On Indoor Practice Facility

SALT LAKE CITY -
The University of Utah has begun construction on a new indoor practice facility, U. Director of Athletics Dr. Chris Hill announced today. The $6 million permanent structure will be built on the site formerly occupied by the Bubble, Utah's indoor practice facility since 1995.
"An anonymous donor came to me on March 31 and made a challenge lead gift of $2 million," said Hill. "The donor made the gift subject to a deadline of Memorial Day to raise the rest of the funding and the facility being completed by November in order to help keep up the winning momentum of the Urban Meyer football program."
The groundbreaking began on Monday, June 14. The design-build project will be substantially completed by November 2004 under the oversight of VCBO Architects and Okland Construction. The facility will be constructed of red masonry, topped by metal and translucent and clear paneling that will allow for natural light.
It will be located on Guardsman Way, adjacent to the Dee Glen Smith Center and the Thomas Kearns McCarthey Practice Fields. The 74,000 square foot building will house a regulation size football field with FieldTurf-the same surface used in Rice-Eccles Stadium-and the interior height of 60 feet will allow for kicking and punting drills. It will also contain restrooms, storage and netting and batting cages for the baseball, softball, golf and soccer teams. The entry way will feature a "Legends" photographic display of former Ute greats in the sports that will use the facility.
Said head football coach Urban Meyer, "The addition of this new indoor practice facility makes our facilities comparable to any in the nation. We now have everything we need to succeed on the football field and in the classroom. Just as important, the new indoor practice facility shows the commitment the Salt Lake community has made to our football program."
